Groundhog Day 2021- Punxsutawney Phil

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/groundhog-day-2021-punxsutawney-phil-predicts-6-more-weeks-of-winter/

Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog emerged from his burrow on a snowy Tuesday morning and saw his shadow, declaring there would be six more weeks of winter. Members of Punxsutawney Phil "inner circle" woke up the furry critter at 7:25 a.m. to see whether he would see his shadow or not.
...

I think they should wake him up at 3am just to make sure he can't see his shadow...

So, I'm always confused about this - is 6 more weeks of winter a long time or a short time? (because my birthday is in about 6 weeks, and we've had some really bad storms on my birthday). If he doesn't see his shadow, then what?

Technically, Spring is in about 6 weeks no matter what. Groundhogs Day doesn't really mean anything. Chat Icon

6 weeks is the worse of the two outcomes so I am assuming they consider 6 weeks a long time!

If he doesn't see his shadow, then it's only 41 more days of Winter... Chat Icon

Since he saw his shadow, we're supposed to have wintery weather for the next 6 weeks. If he didn't, it is supposed to be a mild winter.

Over the last 100+ years, his accuracy rating is somewhere in the 35% to 40% range, so.....

It's "6 weeks of winter or an early spring" so a long time but I am with you in never understanding that. Frankly March usually brings one last resurgence of garbage weather.

Sure, we get warm days occasionally but spring never starts anywhere close to 2/2.

So the whole thing is dumb on many levels.
