Career change?
Ok, so you guys heard my sob story last week about my miserable career situation. I am looking to make a move and networking as best I can given the pandemic.
BUT- my industry is just stressful. I can move wherever I want within the industry and I'm probably not looking at significant change from a stress perspective.
So, I must ask....has anyone successfully changed careers? Where did you start and where did you end up? Was it worth it?

Re: Career change?
I left a private sector middle management type desk job to become a teacher at 29. I had been at my old company 7 years and rose through some of the ranks but realized I was bored and unfulfilled and really wanted to work with youth.
I taught in a high school for several years and am now out of the classroom in an admin type position.
It wasn't easy but I am very glad I did it for a whole bunch of reasons.
I haven't watched a clock in many years and I feel, for the most part, a lot of job satisfaction. I love our students and adore most of the people I work with. My boss is a gem and I feel respected, although I didn't feel that way at every school I worked at along the way.
I missed the "sob story" otherwise I would try to tailor my response to your situation, but I would be happy to share more info via PM if you have any questions.
Good luck!

Career change?
I went back to school at 31. Graduated law school at 35. I don’t practice. I have a non traditional law career. It’s been overall great. I work 9-5 and get paid a nice salary.

I went back to school (law school) at 28. Worked at a traditional legal job for many years, and got totally burnt out. Then started a job in a whole new legal field 6 years ago and really like it a whole lot more than my previous legal field job

Do you have an idea what you want to do?
I changed fields - I was let go from my job of almost 20 years and I was in a specialized role with many transferable skills. It took me awhile to find something - which I found through a relative - and it was a completely different field (I was in finance specific to one industry and I moved to project management for higher education). I didn’t like it so I continued to look and found an accounting job for more money and a better fit.
It helps if you know someone who can help you get your foot in the door to let them see your transferable skills - as many resumes go through a scanning system and they automatically eliminate ones that aren’t a perfect match.

Could you switch the type of setting that you work in? For example, my DH does IT/systems engineering for big financial institutions which is long hours stressful. He could switch and go work for a hospital or other technology company doing similar work.

Career change?
I used to work at a nursing school and there were a lot of people that went back to school - even in their 50s. Almost everyone I've talked to say they love being a nurse.

I work in the same field but a COMPLETELY different setting. I switched 3 years ago because of how stressful my old job was. I’ve begun to hate my job again mostly because I got put into a supervisor position and it was a quick and abrupt change and I hate being boss. I thought I was going to be interim. I still am kind of but it’s been 6 months and will be permanent for at least another year so.... I plan to stay but I feel you!

Thank you all. I work in research operations. I’ve never done anything else.
I’m not completely opposed to going back to school, but without a complete lifestyle overhaul I could only go part time while I worked and cannot fathom adding school on top of my job.
I could probably move into project management at a university or hospital administration without much issue but that, again, is a foot in the door situation.
It’s a crap situation but that you all for responding!

I've worked in higher ed for over 20 years (4 different universities) - the pay is crap compared to other places. Benefits are really good though.

I did a short stint as a project coordinator for a university and I agree - the pay was crap. After 4 years though there are great tuition benefits.
