Choice of vaccines

I have an appointment at Stony Brook for April first to get vaccinated. At this point I believe it is for the two dose pfizer vaccine.

I have the chance to get the Johnson and Johnson next week.

I am doing a lot of reading to compare the different vaccines. What is really holding me up is the original vaccines have been given to the public and I can see the long term side effects from it in a larger population. Johnson and Johnson has only just started.

I am not sure if I should jump on the JandJ because I can get it quicker or hold out for the two dose.

Just looking for any thoughts and insights.

I've had both doses of pfizer, as did my sister in law. She had no side effects to it. I had a sore arm, dry mouth, back of head headache, felt dizzy and had brain fog. All of my side effects except my sore arm went away after 24 hours. I know 3 others who had pfizer and they all had the same effects as I did. My husband, brother, sister in law, and my MIL and FIL had Moderna. My FIL had no side effects. Everyone else that had their second dose was much sicker than anyone who had pzifer. My parents are getting J andJ next week.

I wouldn't use a 1-2 day side effect as the litmus test for which one I want to get. I would look at other factors like...... ease of getting both vaccines (if scheduling is difficult then 1 shot would be easier), efficacy of the vaccine (the 2 dose shots have a higher effective rate than J&J - which is 85% but 100% for staying out of the hospital or dying), and the effectiveness of beating the different strains that are spreading thru the US.

If I could get an appointment for next week I would just take whichever vaccine was offered.

My parent got a 2 am appointment at Javitz center. Check for late night appointments .

I'm not eligible yet but I would like the J&J because it's only one shot.

After that I would go with Pfizer just because I've known many people to get it with minimal side effects. More people I know had side effects after the Moderna second shot. This is all anecdotal of course.

I'm reading this to mean you have seen that the public, for the most part thus far, has been fine with the Moderna and Pfizer but we haven't had enough exposure to J&J to know. Personally, I would wait for Pfizer. HIgher efficacy rate and there have been people vaccinated for months wiht it and haven't turned into zombies yet. ( - sorta LOL)

If you are leaning more towards the Pfizer - you can try to get an earlier appt. My original appt was on 3/14 but I was able to get an appt at 2/25. If you log into the state site and keep clicking every so often, earlier appts come up.

If you wait for the Pfizer one, you won’t be fully vaccinated until May. If you get the J&J one, you’ll be fully vaccinated by the time of your first Pfizer shot. That is what I would base my decision on.

Does it tell you when you sign up which vaccine they'll have?

ETA - sorry I didn't answer your question. I would be weighing the same things.

If I get the vaccine at the end of this year or next year, I will get J&J.

One and done just like my decision with having kids!
