Second grade girl (7) present suggestions needed please

DD is invited to a birthday party so we need to get a gift for a second grade girl (turning 7).

We know nothing about the girl or her family.
But I think the party is going to be $ per person. (I think maybe $50?)

So what do second grade girls like?
Barbies?
LOL?
Lego?
Those do it yourself craft stuff?

Thank you (and now we can go back to arguing about covid)

Oh boy I am out of that age bracket for awhile but $50 sounds like A LOT. I would say more like $20-$25.

Typically we spend $25-$30 and everything you mentioned is good. Also the pop its/fidget toys are very popular.

$50 is extremely generous. I think in the $25-30 is a good range. Barbies, cute PJs, gift cards are all great gift ideas.

$20-30. My nieces are 6 and 8 and enjoy doing crafts and playing with Barbies and their My Generation dolls (American girl knock offs).

LOL dolls and bead crafts are still a bit hit for that age. I would be spending about $25 unless it was a super close friend.

have no idea who the family is.
BUT - the party is at Chelsea Piers so I assume its going to be $$$

Isnt the gift supposed to be like a wedding where your check has to at least cover your plate.
So I estimate its going to be like $35 a person to attend, so the gift should be $50.

Is that the wrong way to look at it? (this is like the first party we're invited to)

so tomorrow we're going to Sam's and Walmart (DS has to provide snacks for the class this week) so hopefully we'll be able to find some good gifts there.

Thanks everyone

When DS was younger we went to parties at Chelsea Piers, but we really didn't budget differently. At that age it was around $30 (but I'm talking like 8 years ago lol). We always got awesome gifts at BJ's. I'm sure you can get something at Sam's. We did GC later, when he was maybe in 4th grade. I would think crafts are good at that age for a girl.

No!!! You’ll be broke ??
Maybe for a communion/ bar mitzvah/ sweet 16, but just a kid from school? $25-30 seems to be the norm.

No and only in NY do they do the “cover your plate” thing. People out of state think it is even ridiculous.

Your kids have never been to a birthday party before? Just asking as mine started going at 2-3 years old with friends from daycare. Our first one we had was 3 years old for them outside of the house.

Umm $800-$1,000 for a birthday party? Sorry but that is insane. Kids parties were never that expensive. Maybe we hung out with poor people lol.

Nowhere in his comment did he indicate that they have never been to a birthday party before.
This one just happens to be at a very expensive location.

I guess I read it incorrectly thinking any party....

DD is in second grade:
first grade was fully remote so she didn't make any friends = no parties
kindergarten became remote early on, so no parties
pre-k I think she went to one party.

My wife and I are both shy, quiet introverts so we don't have many friends (hence me posting questions here instead of "ask a friend what they think") so no parties that way.

So basically DD has not gone to parties.

oh...and we ended up buying two items:
1. Marker and Paint set that comes in a "suitcase" - $20
2. Hair clip coloring set with markers and glitter, etc - $20

I was thinking two items: one fun and one science/learning type but couldn't find a good science one so we went with art one

Those sound perfect!

I normally spend ~$30 on gifts for classmates and ~$50 on gifts for DD’s close friends. So you really aren’t that out of the ballpark.

I agree, they sound fun!

And don’t hesitate to ask. As wacky as this board can be, it has helped me numerous times when I couldn’t ask a question in real life.
