I’m not understanding this post. Vaccinated people don’t have to quarantine.

I’m seeing so much about this topic- thanksgiving with unvaccinated family members and I’m utterly confused. What difference does it make any more? Vaccinated people are contracting covid in droves! An urgent care nurse on Long Island told me the last few days they’ve had so so many covid cases - all vaccinated people! I have a friend that had the booster a month ago and just got covid! If you are letting the unvaccinated guest be your deal breaker that makes zero sense to me at this point!

What makes sense doesn’t really matter for the OP as Thanksgiving is soon, so I’ll put that aside. The OP doesn’t really state her reasons, but it seems that she doesn’t want to have to quarantine her son again because he won’t be fully vaccinated at that point. Even if OP is vaccinated, then she would have to stay home with her 10-year old son making her and/or her husband miss work to stay with him, I guess. Do 10-year olds stay home alone these days?

At least that is what I got from her post. Would be great if the OP could clarify exactly what the issue is.

I think she is overthinking it honestly as wouldn’t 1 shot help out if anyone IS even sick?

Vaccinated counts as 2 weeks after the second shot.

If OP misses work then this could be a very valid concern for her.

I guess now they consider it 3 shots. Even that is not working either though.

I see the missing work bit but that would be with anyone illness I would think.

We are not sitting here and debating the third shot or if it works or not.

Yes, it could be anyone with an illness. But right now it is 10 days quarantine with someone who is technically unvaccinated. Those are the facts and that is what is happening right now. Maybe it will change, who knows?

If I were OP and this were the situation with work, yes, I would reduce my risk as much as possible.

If it isn’t a work situation, then that’s her personal choice and how comfortable she feels.

Yeah the work l thing sounds like a hassle. I remember when my kids when younger all my days went to them when they had to be home. It sucks but that’s the sacrifice we take when we have kids.

Everyone also needs to remember that a house full of vaccinated people can get abd spread covid too though.
My coworker has it now. She's vaccinated. She believes she got it from her friend who is also vaccinated and had it.
So vaccine status shouldn't even be as much a concern as maybe how these people are living...(traveling, using mass transit, being in crowded places a lot, wearing masks etc)

Very much this. Unless your fam/friends are vaccinated and never leave their home, it really doesn’t matter.

Re: Thanksgiving and Covid

Opinion: Don't bring your not-fully-vaccinated child to an hours-long indoor gathering with unvaccinated people. Spend Thanksgiving with your brother and your parents. Visit your ILs the next day.

Just looking for opinions please. No judgement.

So my older sister has a big family she is very consumed with. She gets help from my parents since there are 3 in college. My BIL doesn't have a side of the family so they are always with my parents and rely on them a lot. Also my sister makes the money and my BIL doesn't work much either so isn't much help with money.
My brother isn't married and no kids. He's a nurse and works a ton of hours.

My BIL won't get vaccinated bc he believes in those conspiracy theories. I have friends who won't get it either, but my BIL's reasons are a bit out there. My brother won't see them bc he has some PTSD from seeing so many deaths in the Covid unit when he was busy last year. He hardly sees my family too.
I feel like I am always the one trying to get everyone together and I'm the youngest. My parents don't like confrontation so they stay out of it and always trying to do whatever they think helps.
Last holiday for Rosh Hashanna my sister said she was getting the kids tested for school. Long story short my 9 yr old nephew the next day found out he had Covid so we all had to quarentine. My boys missed their first week of school even though my 12 yr old is vaccinated bc we didn't want to take a chance and had to cancel on my inlaws dinner the next day too and felt bad bc she made everything

Here's the thing... we decided to get my 10 year old son vaccinated last week. We want to get together for thanksgiving at my parents again with my sis and her family. My BIL won't get vaccinated and my sister's inviting all the older kids boyfriends and girlfriends who are also coming from big families before.
The next day my 10 yr old is due for 2nd vaccine and then we are supposed to go to my IL's the next day after. Should we go again and take any chances or just go to my IL's.
Sorry so long... I hate all this, but asked my sister and she doesn't care bc she has her family and my IL's also want us to be there for the holidays too.

Just be careful with this line of thinking. Spending hours indoors with vaccinated individuals can also result in children getting sick.
My example above of my vaccinated co worker getting Covid from her vaccinated friend is why.
If you are that worried about a child...or anyone...getting Covid it's best to stay home from ALL gatherings

Wow! Ok, I didn't realize this post would get this much attention and totally forgot about it.

Maybe I didn't explain myself.

I love my sister, but yes, she can be careless and selfish so when I just said... how many people will be there she didn't know. That is fine, but then she has to understand her kids coming from a dinner elsewhere with lots of family member then going to the next house and so on is a lot of exposure.
I will wait till he is fully vaccinated then make plans.

Again... it's just so he can get his vaccine the next day.

ETA - and yes, I do know vaccinated can still get Covid and still spread it. Again, it's about all having to stay home after. Last time we were together my boys missed the first week of school.

I would probably go but I would also be washing my hands incessantly and reminding my kids of the same. Before Covid, people still got sick from family gatherings with the flu, stomach viruses, etc. Everyone is sharing the same serving utensils, not washing hands, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've been at a get together and 2 days later several attendees are sick. But, not usually us since I've always been that crazy person about washing hands, etc. Bring the alcohol wipes, leave sanitizer around the serving tables, remind everyone to wash hands, remind everyone to cough or sneeze in their elbow and you will probably be fine. Covid isn't just airborne, people are forgetting. Hand washing will always be the number 1 way to prevent disease and illness. Probably why the numbers are creeping up.

I am a hand washer, always have been, more than others at times but my family.....smh...not sickly people either.

I think illness has a lot to do with genes and how well you take care of yourself.

Many don’t fuel themselves up and wear themselves out and lower their immune system to illnesses.

With places packed all over the place, I don’t believe numbers are creeping up. I honestly got off the Suffolk Health site that I went on for the daily numbers as they won’t let people comment anymore and while I didn’t comment, I think that says a lot as most weren’t even saying anything bad.

I don't know. My sister has covid, she's been battling it for almost two weeks now. She is very healthy, in shape, exercises.

And what do places being packed have to do with numbers not going up? I'm confused by that statement. Places are packed, people don't wear masks anymore, which would explain an increase in numbers. Especially during cold and flu season, which we are currently in.

Uggh that stinks. Is she vaccinated?

My point is that if so many are sick, places would not be packed. There have been no super spreaders and it is football and hockey season with people packed in. Bars/restaurants/clubs are packed every weekend.

No, she's not. Her whole family has it, none of them are vaccinated. They had it bad, too. I've known a TON of people who have had Covid recently. Most of them vaccinated though, and none of them as bad as her family has had it.

You realize there are millions of people who live on Long Island, right? So yes, places are still packed. That doesn't mean people aren't sick. This conversation is getting old though. You will never believe people are actually sick from Covid, not sure what to tell you at this point.

If you are exposed to Covid it takes days before you are contagious and then a couple more days before you are actually sick. If people go from place to place on Thanksgiving they are not catching it at one house and then spreading it at another. It is completely impossible. The only way they are spreading it is if they were exposed a couple days before. So caring how many people they saw immediately before seeing you is unnecessary. Still, it is a lot of people to expose your son to, but again it's not like he is going to get exposed and get sick within 24 hours and not be able to get the shot. That's just not how it works.

And he can easily get exposed to any of the people you are currently visiting unless they have been quarantined for 14 days or took a Covid test.

Unless you really don’t care about going or it’s not a huge deal to you, if you miss it, then I wouldn’t skip it for the reason you said.

Do they know how they got it?

Once again, I do believe people have had covid and do still get covid. I do believe it is much better than March 2020 when this was all new and they didn't know how to control it.

Same.

My friend's daughter tested positive after her first shot - it doesn't impact the shot - it just means you have to quarantine.

But like the others said - anyone could make you have to quarantine.

I wouldn't skip it for the reasons you mention. If he wakes up sick the day of his second shot, it will have nothing to do with that dinner.

But if the whole situation makes you uncomfortable and you don't trust the people you will be around, you can certainly use that as an excuse to skip it.

I don't think anyone can answer this question but you. Everyone has different levels of comfort with both Covid and the vaccine.

If it were me, I wouldn't go. It makes no difference to me though if everyone there were vaccinated as in my real life all the COVID cases I know of are all vaccinated with COVID and spreading it to their family and friends. To me the deal breaker would be 1. the sheer number of people who you have no idea how they live every day and who they have been in contact with, INDOORS, UNMASKED and in close quarters and 2. the second shot is the one that carries the highest risk of reaction, I wouldn't want my child to be fighting ANYTHING(whether it be COVID, the Flu or Strep or any plain old virus) at the time they got it especially since we know next to nothing about the side effects right now. . That said, I wouldn’t have scheduled my child for any vaccine right after a big holiday gathering during flu season even before covid. BUT, I am a VERY cautious person that is NOT a risk taker so.... my point is...what difference does it make what I would do! LOL

Unless her child never sees anyone on a regular basis, which she said they go to school and I don't think school is 100% masked and even people who are, still have gotten sick, they never will be safe, from what you are saying.

I'm not sure how this adds anything. Obviously NOTHING is 100 percent but there are different levels of risk. If you cross a huge intersection with speeding cars and no traffic light you are alot more likely to get hit by a car than a quiet two late road with a four way traffic light. Like I said, everyone is different but to not acknowledge that this is a higher risk of getting sick situation is just Chat Icon

Wow! Ok, I didn't realize this post would get this much attention and totally forgot about it.

Maybe I didn't explain myself.
My main reason is bc my 10 year old is due for the 2nd vaccine the next day. I am not afraid of Covid, but didn't want him to be exposed when he will be getting the shot the very next day.

Yeah kind of like the stupid mandates of only 10 people in your home or 10 people in a work cafeteria. Only one person per table but those same people can go sit outside together.
All makes no sense. You are either going to get sick or you are not.

This reminded me of something off topic but so ridiculous and illogical.
DD is taking Home Ec this year (they call it Modern Living now).
But on days they cook something they have to go outside to eat it. The other day she was annoyed because they made french toast sticks but couldn't eat them because it was raining out and they couldn't go stand outside in the courtyard like animals to eat.

So I said to her- but don't you eat lunch every day in the cafeteria- INDOORS?
Yep
With tons of kids and like 20 at a table?
Yep

But you can't eat inside in modern living class. With about 15 kids and like 5 per table spread out.

Yeah. Logical.

So ridiculous. It's hard to take rules seriously when they are nonsensical like this.

Same.

My friend's daughter tested positive after her first shot - it doesn't impact the shot - it just means you have to quarantine.

But like the others said - anyone could make you have to quarantine.

My son had to quarantine from school for the first time ever this year because he was exposed from a kid who was vaccinated. You never know.

The only thing that made it worse, was that the kids who were vaccinated and exposed could go back school the following day. It was so stupid. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't ignore or dismiss. Just some make absolutely no sense at all. That 11th person is going to make or break your get together. Come.on.
I watched some guy on TV last night who they interviewed who literally will not allow any unvaccinated person in his home for Thanksgiving without taking a test at his door. Why bother if you are so afraid of everyone else after 3 shots?

It makes absolutely no sense. At my job if you are vaccinated you only have to show your card once and then you are fine. If you are unvaccinated you need to test weekly. Sooooo the people who are testing KNOW they are not sick but the vaccinated who are not, do not and could be spreading it around.

Even better...my SIL was fully vaccinated in April. At a recent doctor appt she asked for an antibody test just to see. 0. She's at 0. 6 months later
But her vaccine card is still valid for her job, not having to quarantine, travel, NYC life etc. She has the same antibodies as me...0. But she has all the rights the vaccinated have.
Makes sooooo much sense!
