Nell, your story is making my blood boil. Please follow through on this and keep us posted. Do these ******* idiots in charge realize that other parts of the country are NOT DOING THIS???? My kids go to school like it’s 2019. No one has dropped dead yet! This makes me so angry.

We came to NY for a few days around Christmas. It was awful. Every other commercial on TV was telling me to get the vaccine. Newsday was ALL about Covid. The cashier at CVS told me to put a mask on. Chat Icon

People in other parts of the country are not living like this.

I know. If it was possible for me to move out of this horrendous state, I would be gone already.
Funny thing about Newsday, I told my DH to please cancel the subscription because EVEYR SINGLE DAY the headlines are just Covid, Covid, Covid.
I said, if Covid disappeared from the earth tomorrow, what they do with their paper? What could they possible use to fill the pages?
It's ridiculous.

I'll keep you posted on what comes of the school thing.
Nobody is responding to anyone.
Which is even more disgusting.

Are you on the middle school page on fb? I know when I was on there, they would respond to that as the teachers and principal follows that.

Yes there are 2 and I am on both.
There is also an offshoot group for the entire district that has more people who are against vaccine mandates for kids and all these ridiculous rules and that board has been blowing up as well- though that one is private and only one BOE member is on it- one that thinks similarly- but no other school staff is on it I don't think

I would be so furious. My son is in middle/high school as well and they can't go to their lockers during the day. They all have to carry around these enormous backpacks so no one wears a jacket. You wouldn't be able to walk around with it all day. They all complain on cold days about the windows being open and the kids with the seats closest to the windows are freezing.

Also, while being cold technically can't make you sick, being cold for an extended period can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness, so this is outrageous. People in NY have legitimately lost their minds.

It's crazy - our school is warm (hence why I have a flushed child)... I just can't!

@NN -

I am really sorry that happened to your DD. I believe our kids are the same age and my son went through his "I want to go to school practically naked" phase last year so I can imagine how many were in shorts and such.

They absolutely should have let them get their jackets at the minimum, but I was also never a fan of being forced outside for recess in the cold. I get that could be a logistical issue even before Covid, but ugh.

DS's MS doesn't even have recess so it's moot for me.

But I don't blame you for being furious.

This is actually bringing back memories of being in my catholic school uniform with a skirt and knee high socks in the freezing cold waiting for the bus and having to do outdoor recess. It is painful when you are that cold. I think that's why I hate being cold as an adult - because I associate it with pain.

Our schools do not have the kids outside when it is below freezing AND they are properly dressed. If it is cold out and a child doesn't have a jacket they are kept inside for recess. This has been an issue for many of the boy moms whose children refuse to wear a coat. Forcing kids outside who are not dressed appropriately is crazy.

I would be contacting the Board of Ed to be completely honest.

Update:
I got no responses from anyone I emailed. Which is an issue in and of itself.

But when my daughter got home today I asked her if she was forced outside at lunch today. She said they made an announcement that due to getting a lot of emails from upset parents (you think?) that if they were too cold the didn't have to go outside and if they did want to go outside they had to have their coats. And if at any point they got too cold they could come back inside.

So I guess the 100's of screaming parents and their inboxes blowing up got through to them.

But again, they could have at least sent out a group email to address our concerns or answer us in some way. That goes to show you how much they give a crap about parental concerns.

But either way I feel better knowing my child won't be subjected to that again.
You would think school administrators would know better.
How did they think that would go over?
It's a bit scary when you think about it!

Yes the issue is they told us about this yesterday evening so nobody knew to send their kids to school on Monday after break dressed for this.
Many were in shorts- which is crazy anyway but being around middle schoolers ever day they should see how the kids dress and have at least let us know over the weekend that on Monday they need to have a coat or pants or whatever.
The whole thing was handled so poorly.
And the response was poor too because if not for my DD telling me how it was handled today, I'd never know.

I'm glad it was resolved but it is odd that they didn't send one email to all parents saying all of that. They probably are overwhelmed though between that and covid and staffing issues though - which shouldn't be an excuse but still.

We are in person for now. Hopefully NY will shorten the quarantine requirements soon so that districts don't have these staffing issues.

Essential works have shortened isolation periods. My sister is a nurse and went back on day 8 - she still was symptomatic on day 5. My brother and brother in law are cops and went back on day 6. My district said you can come back on day 6 assuming no fever/symptoms for 24 hours.

The problem is it’s not consistent…I tested positive over the break…my job told me 10 days…my DH told his job about me they tell him no office 5 days…my poor kids whose school I informed today get 20 days from my positive test…they have no symptoms since I did my best to be away from them as much as possible but according to nyc doh this is the quarantine for exposure to people in household…and there’s no remote so my kids are basically doing nothing for 2 weeks.

that is crazy! DH tested positive on 12/23. He's essential at a hospital- they told him 5 days if no symptoms/fever. His symptoms lasted until 12/29 & he went back today. I tested positive on Christmas Morning, and my symptoms lasted until 12/29 too. We still have lingering coughs & congestion (plus we're freaking exhausted after doing anything). DD tested positive on 12/27- she had such mild symptoms that lasted about 2 days- I sent her back today. And I did not inform her school, since it's been 7 days since she tested positive and she never even had a fever. She was not IN school the week of Christmas (Ironically, i kept her home to avoid exposure so we could celebrate with family, which didn't happen LOL)

Are you all vaccinated and have the booster? This is not the first time this has gone through your home, correct?

That's all she cares about. She has an unhealthy obsession with a vaccine she doesn't even want. It's bizarre.

I think that the concern in closing schools is that once they close, they are done. It isn't just going to be for a week. Because not much will change in a week. In fact it may get worse. So it will linger on and on because no one will be able to figure out when it is safe to reopen. Everyone will be waiting for zero cases again. And then we will have a situation where kids have lost another 3-4 months of education, sports, and socialization. And oh yes - they will also have to admit the magical vaccine did not cure the pandemic.

I don't know what the answer is. My kids said today there were tons of students and teachers out. I don't know how staffing is even working. I don't want schools to close. But at this point I am so incredibly defeated and mentally and emotionally exhausted that part of me doesn't give a flying fig anymore. It is completely draining just to get through each day lately. Whatever happens happens. I'm out.

Honestly it's going to get to the point where life isn't worth living anymore.
So I'll just take my chances and if I'm meant to die of Covid, it's fate.
I honestly just don't give a fuk anymore either.
So sick of it.
Whatever.
My child was locked out of her school today for half a lunch period in the freezing cold so they could socially distance in the cafeteria.
Half of them had no coats.
They were locked outside like animals.
Actually animals are treated better. You'd report your neighbors for leaving a dog outside in this cold.
And these are the people in charge of our children's education.
I am in the process of finding an attorney.
And reporting them to the state for abuse.
So I have literally zero my fuks to give about this new head cold.
I don't care to hear the bullshitt about numbers or testing.
I don't care even a little anymore .
They are sending home tests and I'll toss them in the trash. That's the point I'm at. I'm so angry I can't even describe it.

That is horrible. I saw the post on one of the mom pages about how they will be keeping windows open so bundle your kids up. Many are like, well the cold doesn't get you sick so this is a good thing. ANYTHING can get you sick if your immune system is low. I don't CARE what a local mom says or a hundred scientists. If my immune system is low and it is hot or cold, I am getting sick if others are sick also. Don't people even KNOW their own bodies by the time they are an adult? People are just getting so stupid and I get the circulation thing, I honestly do as when you don't clean the filters out at work, it has always been that more people get sick. Yes, experience is what I have which you would think these 30.40 and 50 year old people would have by now.
I honestly can not concentrate when I am cold and it is torture to me so I can't imagine a child having to wear a winter coat and be freezing trying to learn. Get better circulation systems. We pay enough taxes and the teachers get paid enough so how about cutting salaries like in other states and taking care of the students.

I'd like whatever moron forced my child outside yesterday to go outside today and stand there for half an hour with no coat on. They weren't even letting kids get their jackets from lockers.
How about they try it?

That is absolutely ridiculous! So sorry your daughter had to go through that!!

Concerned, yes, as now my husband has to wear a mask at work after they were told either vaccine or mask and he got vaccinated. Many of my friends are sick, some VERY that are vaccinated and boosted.

This is a shit show and people, like on this board, won’t admit how badly this is being handled by the government and higher ups (like school).

Mine never wears a jacket but does wear sweats in colder weather but the kids who pass my house everyday have shorts on. They are middle school boys (extremely annoying ones at that honestly who I am shocked if they were out there in the cold wouldn’t have said something as they are loud and obnoxious).

Wtf? Why couldn’t they get their coats?? I would absolutely complain. That’s inhumane.

My DD still has recess outside. The teacher sent an email basically saying to dress them warmly and she will make sure they are bundled up appropriately.

What I don’t get is why would they make them go outside when they’re not dressed properly, it’s beyond! And then they have the audacity to not even contact parents to give an apology but instead make an announcement in the loudspeaker for the students?!? Super strange! I would continue complaining and put pressure so this def doesn’t happen again.

Re: Districts remote week of 1/3?

I know! When DS was in ES and MS, they wouldn't go for outside recess it it was below certain temperature and teachers making sure they all had their jackets zipped up.

The lack of communication and making those unreasonable choices would upset me so much.

ETA: On those days we knew they wouldn't go outside due to temperature, DS would wear shorts to school, because it was very warm inside. I can't imagine him in shorts locked out with yesterday's weather Chat Icon

How much you want to bet they were all huddled together too outside because it was cold and NOT socially distancing. This is ALL stupid and common sense has gone out the door. I probably would have been fired as I would have never let them go outside.

This is all insanity!!! I wanted to respond yesterday but all you would've seen was words blocked out with all the curses I wanted to use. LOL. We trust these people to take care of our kids and this is what they do?? People have lost their damn minds.

It's frustrating and it makes less and less sense by the day.

And then they wonder why nobody wants to comply with anything anymore. Because we are DONE! Done with 2 years of this nonsense. Changing the rules. Moving the goal posts. Treating our children like they are carriers of Ebola
This is why!

My sons Econ class was cancelled because the teacher had a bunch of meetings today. Wtf? Teaching is your #1 meeting. How is this a reason? But remotes works and is awesome. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Whatever’s, it’s 45 min I don’t have to yell or police him while trying to work.Chat Icon

Lol - sometimes my kids teachers have meetings during the day, usually they have a sub though... Usually it's training.

I was listening today - there was a woman who moved from NYC to FL over break and she was saying how her kids were going to school maskless for the first time in awhile now they are in FL.

I have friends that have moved to FL, TN, and SC. They all say the same!

I know FL is great. My coworker is in FL and when I told her my son was remote she said “thank god I’m in FL”. Lol. I was like “yep!”. We’re confused over here and practicing the theory of insanity!
