Worst Blood Shortage in Over a Decade
The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care. Doctors have been forced to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments. Please schedule your blood donation today.
What is causing the blood shortage crisis?
10% overall blood donation decline since March 2020.
62% drop in college and high school blood drives due to the pandemic. Student donors accounted for ~25% of donors in 2019 accounted for just ~10% during the pandemic.
Ongoing blood drive cancellations due to illness, weather-related closures and staffing limitations.
Additional factors like a surge of COVID-19 cases and an active flu season may compound the already bad situation.

DW and DS are donating today. I can't donate yet because it's too soon since my last donation, but I'll be donating again very soon.

Yet another thing the paranoia and fear mongering over Covid is causing an issue with.
People are scared to leave their houses let alone donate blood.
Thanks for the PSA. I know DH likes to donate when he can too

I’m getting calls almost daily. I feel terrible because I can’t donate right now. Was slightly anemic with recent bloodwork and just got a tattoo Jan 3rd
Last time I gave, I was slightly anemic but went for it anyway. I was covered in bruises up and down my arms and weak as all hell for quite some time.
I hope more people go out and donate. It’s so quick and easy to do

Ugh I should probably donate I am o negative but one I always seem to pass out and two I just don’t even have the time. The few times I have donated it was always through work when they were having a blood drive so it was convenient and I was able to get away to do it!

Yeah, before the pandemic, we had blood drives at work 2x a year. It was just a short walk down the hall, we were on the clock, and we got some type of company swag, and were placed in a drawing for a decent prize. 
The blood donation center isn't far from my house, but definitely farther than down the hall in the same building.

I passed out once because I hadn't eaten much more than a salad that day. The next time I gave blood I had McDonald's for lunch -- no issues then! LOL!
But, every time I donate, I now tell them that I have to have my feet up. It helps. And, I make sure to have a decent meal beforehand.
I'm going to try to make an appointment for this week.

It’s sad but hopefully more people will realize how much of a need there is.
I think some on this board though are just trying to kiss ass for calling the posters kids crappy and probably will never follow through. I hope I am wrong.

If you pass out during donating, you should look into the double red donations (used to be called Alyx, but that is the brand name of one of the machines, so they try to use generic names for the process now). They take out some blood, run it through a centrifuge, take just the red blood cells, then return the rest of your blood through the same needle. You don't lose any volume, so you're less likely to feel light headed or pass out.
Not everyone likes, or can do the blood return, so it may not work for you, but I would suggest looking into it.
I try and do a double-red each donation. Your iron count has to be higher than whole blood donations, so sometimes I have enough iron for whole blood, but not double-red. Also, your time to donate again is double, so they bug you half as often to donate again.

I'm O- also, and donated a couple of times years ago and almost passed out, so I never did it again!

I wouldn’t doubt they ask you on a form and ask what gender you are as you know there is like 70 something genders now. SMH.

That’s super weird! Why? I’m surprised this is happening in NY. It makes me think back when people ignorantly used to think they’d get HIV by hugging someone that had it.
