Anyone have family in Ukraine or Russia?
How are they doing?
If you have family in Russia, what are they saying?
I watch the news and yeah...can't help but cry. Babies being born in bomb shelters, hospice children on trains. This is an atrocity.

Anyone have family in Ukraine or Russia?
I do not but DS piano teacher has family. She said it’s horrible and she’s trying to keep busy not to think about it.

I have a very dear friend in Moscow and we had an almost 2 hour video chat this weekend.
Obviously it’s nothing compared to what people in Ukraine are going through, but she’s definitely hurting. I won’t go into details but she has business dealings with Ukraine normally so now her job is affected and her husband had already been out of work.
Prices have more than doubled but so far the stores have what they need. Supply is dwindling though.
Every day they debate leaving but the issue is that even if she leaves the country, she will still get paid in rubles which will then have to be converted to the new country’s currency at a terrible rate and she will lose basically half of her salary. Even more urgent than that is the fact that if she leaves Russia she will not be able to access any of her money because of the sanctions. She would just have to take out as much cash as she could then deposit it in a new bank in the new country. But her paycheck would continue to go to the Russian bank so she would have to live off whatever cash she could pull out now.
She’s pretty much only comfortable saying what she really feels in her own home. Even walking down the street she doesn’t want to say anything out loud that could get her arrested.
On top of all of this she has a relatively young child in school to worry about.
So it’s pretty bad and I am worried for her

Do you get the impression that she (or "they" in Russia) have a fairly accurate picture of what is going on? In the vide chat, do you think she was free to talk about that or that she held back?

I have family in Moldova and Poland. I also have many Ukrainian and Russian students. I do not talk about it.
Many refugees from Ukraine are arriving here in the next few days.

Good questions.
Yes, I think she had a mostly accurate picture of what is going on. She's an attorney for an international company and therefore well educated, traveled, etc. Everyone in her circle is vehemently against the war but she believes they are in the minority. It's hard to tell what the general population thinks because there is no freedom of speech but she said most people are not well informed and probably support the war.
She did speak freely, but she's also not in a profession targeted by the regime. I know from podcasts and such that some people (i.e. journalists) are super careful lately about who they speak to, what they say, and where they say it.

I’m so sorry for your friend’s loss. My DS has a good friend whose parents were born in Ukraine. I texted his friend’s Mom to show support and say that I’m thinking of her, and she replied that it was just awful. Her brother is there (in Ukraine) with his wife and young (2 year old) son. They spent their nights under their apartment building in the dirt and cold in makeshift bomb shelters. She sent me videos and it was just so sad. They were normal people with their lives upended by all of this. I haven’t spoken to her in a few weeks - I wonder if her brother is fighting with the military now. Her parents were still there in Ukraine too; they refused to leave because THEIR parents were still there, and they are elderly and frail. Just such a sad situation.

Russia cut it off? If so not too surprising since I just read an article about how they are saying that the bombing of the hospital is fake news  that there were really no pregnant people in there.
