And THIS Is why kids are always sick and illness spreads like mad through schools
My DD is getting over a head cold. Tested negative for everything and is feeling better so she's back in school.
She texts me just now saying- I need you to bring me a new water bottle because my friends were all drinking from my water bottle at lunch and then another friend put hand sanitizer on the mouth piece to clean it for me and now I'm scared I'll be poisoned by drinking from it.
Me: Um- what? Why are your friends drinking from your water bottle?
Her: I don't know they just took it and started drinking from it.
Me: Do they realize you are getting over a cold?
Her: Yeah, they know.
Me: well you won't be poisoned from the hand sanitzer on it, just rinse it off, but do NOT drink from it until I run it through the dishwasher. And please don't let anyone drink from your water bottle again. And now they are probably all going to get sick.
Of note- these are not 5 year olds in Kindergarten. These are 12 year olds in middle school.
And we wonder why schools are breeding grounds for illness. Seriously, I thought they knew better by this I guess not...

My kid masked last year. This year (8th grade) he's not masking...... and came home with a cold within 2 weeks of starting school.
Kids are petrie dishes.

Well when they are drinking from each other's backwash, I can see why. Now I know how she got that cold!

Ugh, so gross! LOL!!!
They sneeze and cough all over each other (without covering their faces) and the nose picking is a plague unto itself!

They share everything. It’s disgusting. I teach 9-10th grade and I always tell them to stop sharing drinks. I also tell them to wash their hands before going to lunch since I have sinks/soap in my room and they look at me like I’m insane.

I asked her again when she got home why they drank from her water bottle and she said....because they were thirsty. I said, well maybe catching your cold will teach them to bring their own water to lunch!

My daughter caught a cold the 2nd week into school. She constantly has her fingers in her mouth or is touching her face. I have to tell her a million times a day to stop touching your face without washing your hands first. I don't even want to know what goes on at school bc it's prob so gross.

Not surprised by this. Kids are just gross. And just when you think it'll get better bc they're older you are wrong.
My son is 13 and in middle school. He has rubber bands for his braces and constantly taking them out to eat and putting them back in. I'm like... do you use the hand sanitizer in your bag first before putting your hands in your mouth? Nope bc that's in his locker. Just gross!

Oh yes the rubber bands! I get so skeeved when she takes them out and she leaves them all over the house! I find them when vacuuming all over the floors, and sometimes they are just left on the kitchen table.
And you are right- she is always taking them in and out with dirty hands. And she wants contact lenses because she hates wearing her glasses. I told her until you can figure out basic hand hygiene you are not getting contacts. I can imagine the amount of pink eye we'd be dealing with!

I agree. It doesn't get better. DS is 16 and his friends drink from his water bottle during the games, because it is ice cold DH almost wants to bring ice cold water to the whole team so it doesn't happen
And with the contacts, I had the same fear so we decided for DS to use disposable ones.
