I had no idea Amish and Mennoites

a run puppymills! Man, I always had this pictures of farms and hay and dogs being bred in this lovey-dovey way, but it seems to be the complete opposite! Just hellish! I'm actually really upset that these peaceful people are guilty of such extreme cruelty!

These links enlightened me but also made me cry, so beware there are some graphic pictures on the links. You can also google 'Mennonite Breeder' or 'Amish Breeder.'

These need to be stopped.

They have been doing this for years.
The dogs are a money making business to them and kept in horrible conditions.. The ASPCA in NY has been making the public aware of this for quite a while.

They do need to be stopped.

There are certain "cores" of puppymills across the country. The Amish country is a huge cell of PMs. Check out prisonersofgreed.org for more info.

I knew about this. You would think that their religious convictions would extend to treating ALL life with dignity and humanity.

Re: I had no idea Amish and Mennoites

I am in no way condoning what the do or their practices but you have to realize that the Amish are farmers....farmers treat all animals as just that...animals. They are the things that give us milk to drink or help them tend the fields or in the case of the puppies, make them money.

They do not think of puppeis as pets/family memebers as other do but you have to realize what the thinking is behind that.

Do you feel the same way about chicken farmers or turkey farmers?? They are raising the birds to make money as they are selling them for us to eat. Some people that have chickens or turkeys as pets may feel differently than you do.

Even animals that will be killed for food deserve to be treated humanely while they are alive. Some of the most deplorable conditions for animals are cows that are waiting to be slaughtered. Their lives are brutal. Just because they are livestock and not pets does not mean that they should be mistreated or be subjected to cruelty. Take a look at how puppy mills treat the poor dogs in them. No living creature deserves that, pet, livestock, or pest, period.

No, I don't feel the same way about chickens and turkeys as I do about dogs.

1) Dogs are higher up on the evolutionary tract, much more developed feelings and sensitivity to their surroundings. They can feel more than just the physical pain of these inhumane places. Their suffering is greater because it is proportional their capacity to feel, which is greater than that of a turkey for example. 2) In our culture it is acceptable to eat turkeys and chickens, not dogs. We don't harvest dogs to eat but we do harvest chickens, etc. so I personally do not feel as bad for them. (I understand if some may differ on this point.) 3) Humans have bred dogs to be domestic, humanized animals not wild beasts. Most dogs will starve in the wild. Since we have bred dogs to be pets we should treat them accordingly.

I agree. Puppies, as well as food animals, are sentient beings that feel pain. Even if they consider them as "merchandise" rather than pets, they must realize that they are tormenting these animals (it is hard to ignore their cries and anguish).

And I do extend this consideration to all sentient beings, including farm animals, livestock, dairy cows, chickens and pets - by not consuming these products and maintaining a vegan lifestyle. I am disgusted by this.

Proverbs 12:10 tells us, "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel."

Puppy mills are illegal , no matter how you classify an animal.

Re: I had no idea Amish and Mennoites

Looking back on it my parents got their Min Pin at an Amish puppymill (they live in PA near Amish country)....he is a very sweet dog, but was just diagnosed with Addison's Disease..he is almost 10 years old.

eta: to add that my parents have no clue that they got their dog at a puppymill...this is just an observation I made, and I don't want to upset them.
