Re: international travel

Hm sorry I am no help -- he was born in Spain and I just brought him into the US.

But I think it iwll be difficult, maybe not worth it unless you are going for extended periods.... I know the UK requires 3 month quarantine or so...

it will be extended- this is going to be rough!

My DH is traveling for his job-every 4 months...and I am going with him, now there is a high possibility that in January we are in the UK, Brazil, Mexico, or Japan... my little guy can't be quarantined...I think it would extremely traumatic for him (and me)

This really stinks...

Any suggestions?

Re: international travel

Your best bet is to find out what country you are going to, because all countries are different. For example, here is one site for bringing animals into the UK:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/index.htm

the UK is pretty strict, but not as strict as other countries (example- Australia).

What is important for you is to go to your vet or call up the embassys and find out what they have to do to take the pet with you. Most countries require that you take the pet to a vet no later than 6 months before you leave. Usually you have to get the pet microchipped and different types of vaccinations, in particular rabies. Because the US has rabies this is an important step. after the rabies shot you them get a blood test 6 months later to make sure your pet is free from rabies. The quarantine starts the time you get the shot. so lets say you get the shot 3 months before you leave and you go over to the UK, then the pet will have to stay in quatantine for 3 months in the UK. The UK used to be a lot stricter, but it isnt. If you go someplace like Germany then you just have to make sure your et is microchipped and vaccinated, but there is no time they have to sit in quarantine.

I am not sure about Japan, but I think they may be strict. Australia is *very* strict with quarantine. They actually xray your bags and open them to check for food and stuff after you collect your bags. Australia also has the 6 month wait thingy, but when your pet gets to Australia it must stay in quarantine for 2 weeks, i think.

Anyway, your best bet is to talk to your vet and ask what you should start doing NOW.

best of luck!

ETA- dont forget to take into consideration what this will cost you, taking pets overseas isnt cheap! If you quarantine make sure you add in the costs for that.

he is up to date on shots, he will need to be microchipped ASAP, and go from there, what stinks is that we wont know where we are going right away

Re: international travel

good luck. since you cant find out which country, you should find out about all of them. I know you said he is up to date on shots, but i think you need to get another rabies vaccine, by a vet that that country suggests. then they do the blood test. i am pretty sure this is required of most countries.

Re: international travel

just found out that it MIGHT be Hungary or Romania ...

hopefully, it will be in the US (that would make me VERY happy) but if not, I started looking and those countries don't seem to be so difficult. Not sure exactly though

If you are going to a country that does not have rabies (Ireland or UK being 2) you have to quarentine the animal for 3 months.

From what I understand the UK has changed its policy. In an above link I posted about the PETS scheme. Have I given the wrong information?? Chat Icon

Re: international travel

Update: I am going on MOnday (was suppossed to be today, but got moved to MOnday since I need Boogie to see the vet)
He will be Microchipped !

Anyone ever get this done...
the secretary couldnt give me a straight answer... BUT, Boogie was already vaccinated a few months ago-he is up to date on everything he would need to go away, but websites are saying that He will need to get vaccinated AGAIN so that the microchip can read all of his information...Now, this is going to cause him to have more than he really needs NO?

Like I said, Secretary couldnt tell me, she told me to speak to Vet on Monday... BUTif anyone had this done, maybe you already are aware of the answer...

The UK has a 3 - 6 month quarantine, and I am almost positive that this is after monthly visits at your vet here as well. Let me see if I can find the link.....

This I have never seen before, but I thought it was worth a quick read... link 1

my cat is microchipped, it is a law here. it feels like a tiny grain of rice between her shoulders. I got her like that and then we had to register here with the town council.

it isnt a big deal.

Re: international travel

Okay- so it's official, Boogie is microchipped...poor thing had a rough day, his belly has been upset for two days, and I was worried about his bumps-he was not a fan of the vet today ...

The red bumps I asked about seemed to be scabbed up-so the vet just took them off with his clippers and gave me some cream for him...

He has pills for the uspet belly-it's been really bad-white rice does not seem to be working either...

BUT, we are on our way to having boogie being able to travel with us... hopefully we can...
