Why is it that.....
i always lose socks in the washer/dryer?? am i the only one? where do they go, i feel like i am constantly buying socks!

i swear there is one
because i knowwwwwww i put a pair(meaning 2) socks in there and only one sock comes out...

I'm not allowed to - EVER - I think DH would beat me if I did.  He's super adamant about never losing socks...and knock on wood...our system works.
The "trick" is to bundle the dirty socks together when throwing them in the hamper...and then open them ONLY when above the washing machine. Take them out and throw them immediately in the dryer, making sure nothing falls on the floor or behind the washing machine (or through the sides).
It really works...no beatings yet!
ETA: You know Jen, it's not like we need to add more things to our day... Seriously though...DH is a nutjob when it comes to this!
