Re: do you ever feel like you are daughter in law #2?

DH has only a sister. But could it be because she is PG? I feel like women who are expecting get fawned on by the family. Which is understandable. Chat Icon

i never feel that way with my mother in law. i am sure she is just being this way because of your sister in law being pg.

i don't know. i feel like she just came right in...like she never had to work at being part of the family like women do...she just instantly was a daughter upon her arrival. you know how you have to work on getting on the good side of your fmil and ffil? well, she never did that. she just instantly was. and believe me, it isn't just b/c she's pg. that only is the icing on the cake.

I totally get where you are coming from. When I first started dating DH, his brother was engaged. MIL really didn't treat her all lovey-dovey, so her indifference towards me was not something I read too much into. HOWEVER, six months after BIL's marriage, he separated and instantly started dating his now-wife and MIL was so far up this chicks tush, we would have needed several quarts of Liquid Plummer to get her out. Everything was *Jenn this* and *Jenn that*. Even on my husband's birthday, she designed his cake to Jenn's liking (flavor, etc.) and announced it aloud. Yet she stepped up her antics to make me not so much feel like daughter #2, but # 2 in general. I was dating DH a full year and a half before she ever came along and to date, I have never been treated the same way as she was. Resentment about it? Hell yes. But it makes me feel all warm inside to know that the cherished teddy of the family made her son move out of state to be with HER family in FL because there was "nothing here" for themChat Icon

I'm sorry to hear that. Fortunately I'm the only daughter-in-law so I don't have that problem but I can see where you're coming from. It's probably due to the fact that she's pregnant.

I get where you are coming from too. No one had met my sister in law until one day DH's brother said "OOh by the way Me and (insert girls name here) are getting married and she is due in Sept" Since she was providing MIL and FIL with first grandchild...it was like she was automatically queen of the in-law's.
I have been jealous of her for years.......(wow, i just admitted that out loud)

but now they are getting divorced...I can't wait to see if I move up on the list.
That sounds mean...I don't mean it mean though.

Re: do you ever feel like you are daughter in law #2?

I'm the only DIL, at the moment. But I can understand how you feel. I had some issues with how easily BIL's girlfriend was instanly accepted into the family (it wasn't that easy for me - they're good people but hard on in-laws).

My ILs even gave us the same Christmas presents - we had been married for almost 2 years (and together for 6+) and they had been dating <6 months! Chat Icon

I know exactly what you mean!! Granted I entered the picture much later than she did (she and BIL have been together for 10 years, married for 5; DH and I have been together for 5 years, married for just over 1).

I just feel like they have much more in common...maybe because I'm American? don't know. My family is so welcoming and warm to my DH - I just can't wait to move back to NY!

Re: do you ever feel like you are daughter in law #2?

I have been with FH for 5yrs. we were never formally engaged, however, we have two children together. My FBIL met this girl on the internet and were married within a year. There are so many horrible things I can say but I'll leave it as she made it a point to tell FMIL that her mom told her not to worry about me because no matter what she'll be the first daughter in law. Now I dont talk to my inlaws anymore for other reasons but my issues didnt really start until after FBIL married her. So I definetly feel like the outsider. Now that we have two kids together too they see no reason for us to have a wedding, getting married at city hall will be good enough according to them. I am on the other side of the sprectum. My bil is dating a girl for about a year that my IL's are not so crazy about. Plus I gave them their first grandchild and named him after my FIL

Right now I am the only -IL and I have given them their first grandchild, so I guess by default I an #1 right now. BUT I cant wait for the day that my BIL and SIL get married, and maybe I can be demoted. Honestly my ILS have a lot of demands and expectations and it causes me so much stress, so I am hoping when someone new comes into the family, they can share the burden!

Re: do you ever feel like you are daughter in law #2?

Well I came into the picture much later than my Sis-in -law. They have been together like 15 years...married 7 years. I have been around 3 years...married only 1.

My in laws don't have grandkids from either one and my sis-in-law isn't that friendly so I would say they like me betterChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: do you ever feel like you are daughter in law #2?

Well ....DH has two brothers who have both been married and/or with their wives for anywhere 7-10 years... we're only been together 3 yrs, married less than 1. So I definitely had my work cut out for me Chat Icon

That said - one SIL is a royal beaaaaaaaaaaatch and my MIL cannot stand her (and vice versa). She lives out of state so they hardly communicate.

My other SILis a wonderful girl - she lives closeby my inlaws and was the first to have kids, so she'll always rate"high" amongst my in-laws since they are doting grandparents. BUT on the other hand, she is extremely quiet and private so I cannot say that she is #1 either

SO here comes me, late in the game. For whatever reason, even though I was LAST and have NO kids, I have been told numersou times that I AM daughter in law #1 somehow. Its not like I worked at this title, I was just myself. But the thing is, I genuinely LIKE my inlaws .. they are awesome. We just really clicked from day 1, and they have always treated me like their DAUGHTER (not just an inlaw) . I can honestly say that I enjoy being in their company and chatting with them and its never a chore to be around them, and I guess that shows

My DH is an only child. But, there are times when I certainly feel like my opinion is completely irrelevant.

No, my in-laws are great. I couldn't have asked for better ones. I feel especially close to them because we lived with them for a while when we first got married and formed a nice bond. My husband has 2 brothers so I have 2 SIL's on that side but I don't feel like we are in competition or anything.
