when to move to IVF?

I meet with my RE after my second failed IUI Chat Icon
He told me we are going to start another IUI/clomid cycle. He also told me he wants me to come in next week for an IVF consult. I was shocked he would think about doing this so soon.
What do you guys think? I asked about injectables and IUI, he said we can talk about it but he said they are risky. Guess the risk of multiples.

Thanks!!

Re: when to move to IVF?

Statistically your chances are much greater for success with IVF. Personally I think IUIs are a waste of time and $$, unless they are just trying to find out how you would respond to the medications.

IUIs have a success rate of 15-20% - the same if you were to BD.

What are your infertility problems? THis also determines what is the best protocol.

Re: when to move to IVF?

i have done 4 IUI's with Clomid and one with injectables!! I guess it all depends on the doctor and what you IF problem is!! I really want to do IVF due to male factor infertility but i guess my doctor wants to try other things first!! Who is you RE? I would do IVF if that's what your doctor wants Some people get lucky with IUI's but I haven't!! The success rate is much higher for IVF than IUI's!! GOOD LUCK!!

Re: when to move to IVF?

It depends on your diagnosis etc....

I personally wouldnt have done IVF without IUI w/ injectables to get an idea of HOW I would respond to the injectables....The 3 injectable IUI cycles I had helped to understand what meds to use for IVF....

Yes, IVF has a better success rate....I had 13 Iuis and finally PG on my first IVF...BUT the dissapointment asnd the involvement mentally in the IUIS was much less....meaning the IVF failuer would have crushed me much more then the IUIS failure did.

Also...bottom line for me was money. IVF costs almost 100% times more then an IUI. Does Insurance cover it? Can you afford it?

If I could have afforded the IVF earlier...I would have Done it earlier....

Good luck to you. Im so sorry you have to make these decisions Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: when to move to IVF?

Actually, as Kara said...your chances are better with IVF than IUI. It's actually good that your Dr. is talking about moving forward.

Re: when to move to IVF?

thanks for your replies.

DH and I are diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
Our insurance covers one lifetime IVF.
I am a patient of Dr. Scholls at NSUH.

I was thinking about doing the IUI with injectables. But not sure why he was reluctant. Guess I will find out more on my IVF consult.

Anyone else?

Re: when to move to IVF?

OK knowing that --- I don't understand why he doesn't want to try an IUI with injectibles - this will at least give you an idea of how you will respond. If you only get 1 lifetime IVF...it will be very difficult to deal with a failure -- I mean it always would be, emotionally, psychologically, but add on to that financially (ps - I did 1 iui and 2 ivfs and was not covered for any of it).

Once you move on to IVF you wouldn't go back to IUI so perhaps this is the last chance -- although many many women are successful with IVF after trying multiple times, I just mean you wouldn't go backwards and try IUI again.

How old are you both?

I would ask your RE again about trying one IUI with injectibles just to get a better idea of how you will respond...JMO.

Good luck!!

I would do an IUI with injectables....It cant hurt...Is good practice for what an IVF is like ( more monitoring) and it really helps see how you will respond.

I actually would not have agreed to IVF without it.

I agree/. Dr. Scholl is my doctor and while I love him he is probably THE MOST conservative doctor there, not a big risk taker. But I know if you explian that you only get 1 lifetime IVF and you want to do IUI with injectables so that you have some idea where to go with meds when you move on to IVF he will respect that.Chat Icon

Re: when to move to IVF?

Dh and I are both 32.

What do you guys think would be his reasoning for not initiating IUI/injects?

I am thinking it is probably the way to go for me right now. I am scared with one lifetime IVF, what happens if I didn't need it and the IUI worked. I am also curious about doing the injectables, and seeing how I respond.
