i believe "unit" is the group that this person belonged to...usually its numbered...

although I have a completely different meaning for unit.... 
Maybe if you're able to provide his name, the Vets will be able to find out his unit?

HUmn, I don't know how you could find that out...only thing I could think of is asking his mom...but I dont want you to have to talk to her any more then you need to.
