I probably would have reacted similarly to your DH - with shock.
A good response would have been, "Oh, I didn't realize you're coming tonight. I guess that means you can't make it next week?"

Well - I guess it is too late now but DH should have just said - no, that's fine - I'll be picking her up. If she still didn't get the hint, I would have said, this is a family dinner and we'll see you next week! I guess you could still do that...

i get really upset i find it rude i would be like im sorry but its only a family gathering maybe next time you can come over when you are invited!

ugh..i have a friend who does this sometimes!! I flat out tell her, "um hello.....you might wanna CALL us next time BEFORE you just come over!!" so rude AND annoying!
