Re: Green Car of the Year
I don't get it..... fine, it has great milage for a honkin' SUV, but it doesn't even get 25 mpg.... and most of its drivers will STILL be driving it the majority of the time either alone, or with one passenger.... If a family has under 3 kids, there usually is no need for an SUV. Most of my friends who are SUV owners are almost always driving it alone, and never are hauling a lot of stuff.
if it were a genuine truck or van, one that electricians or plumbers could use on the job, THEN I might agree.....
not terribly green to me

The article did state this. It said why they voted it the most green was because it is a step in the right direction. It gets MUCH better gas mileage than its non-hybrid counterpart and none of the looks or functionality have been compromised. I think the article was trying to make a point that it is possible to be green. People are going to drive SUV's. So lets encourage the car manufacturers to keep making the efficiency better and better. That is why this car was applauded.

Sad that a vehicle that gets 21/22 mpg is considered "green."

ITA. Celebrating how "green" an SUV getting 21 mpg is will only keep people thinking it's okay to drive a vehicle like that when they don't need to be. I see tons of SUVs on the road every day and they almost always have one person driving alone without tons of cargo- IMO, there's no need for that and it should not be applauded as green to get 21 mpg, just because it is less terrible mileage than other SUVs.

I'm confused...there are other non-hybrid trucks that get better mileage than this....so why is this one the car of the year?

Pretty sure those other trucks aren't V8s. Could be wrong, though.

I agree - and as others have said there are NON Hybrid SUV's that get better mileage.
I get that it is a good idea to give kudo's to a vehicle that would traditionally burn up a lot more gas... but calling it Green Car of the Year is just off to me.
It's kind of like a marathon where a handicapped person comes in last. They definitely should get applause for finishing - but you shouldn't call them the WINNER of the race.

I don't know of any FULL SIZE, V8 SUV's getting better gas mileage than this...
I have a mid-size SUV that gets better gas mileage than this (not a hybrid), but I don't know any full size ones that do.

Re: Green Car of the Year
I am definitely a fan of the new technology, and I think it is great that Chevy has some gas-saving abilities whilst not compromising non-hybrid power. It makes the opportunity cost non-existent. I just fear that the masses will not really look into what they are getting and think that this is a *magic solution* because they named it Green Car of the year.
I guess I am defensive about it b/c everyday, without fail, DH gets a customer that complains that their gas mileage is horrible & why did I by a hybrid, blah blah blah. People don't, in general, understand the technology, and do not understand that their fast-lane, 60MPH plus does NOT utilize the non-gas technology.

yeah, I can summarize my feelings like this:
driving a giant hybrid SUV alone is like eating a giant fat-free chocolate cake...... alone.

You won't, there's no such thing as a full size, V8 SUV that gets that kind of mileage.
I know, I drive one.
Alone.
Everyday.
What can I say? I know, I'm the spawn of s*tan. But (for instance) when I go camping with my husband or we go on a road trip, we have NO problem fitting ALL our gear in our full-sized SUV as opposed to our friends who drive Hondas (and the like), including those with small SUVs and still have to ask us to fit their stuff in our vehicle b/c it won't fit in theirs.
I know it's hard to believe, but they do serve a purpose. And just b/c I don't have children doesn't mean I shouldn't own one. What if I owned 2 or 3 large dogs? Do you suppose they would fit in a Civic? I'm gonna guess and say, no. Also, what if I only have 2 kids? Have you ever seen a back seat with 2 carseats in it? Pretty much the rest of the back seat is useless. There's no room for anything else. So if you want to carpool, you pretty much can't b/c you're lacking that 3rd row.
Those are just a few examples.
I just don't understand who generalizations and accusations can be made by someone who doesn't own one of these vehicles... It seems very rash and honestly lacking substance. You can have an opinion, but to state it as if it were fact, just doesn't seem fair to me.
I understand that SUVs aren't for everyone, but owning one doesn't make those who drive them horrible people.

Re: Green Car of the Year
My SIL lives in Florida. She has 4 kids. She has a land rover and a Suburban. When we go down we have to take 2 cars cause there isn't enough room in the suburban for us.
Even if you have 2 kids.... how bout car pooling to soccer practice.
I don't drive an SUV I drive a honda civic but I don't care what people drive.
AND I am not a mini van person and will never drive one. Are the Mini Vans better then SUV's?

Yes minivans are much more fuel efficient than SUVs. The problem is that SUVs are classified as trucks and thus follow the same rules as trucks. This was started back before they became really popular. Jeeps really used to be the only SUVs and most of the people who owned those were people who went off-roading and stuff like that. The family who wanted more room would get a minivan, which is a car. Then other companies started to make SUVs and started to market them to families. Now they are hugely popular, but they are still regulated like a truck and are allowed to have the low fuel efficiencies you see today. The government really needs to step in and re-classify the SUV so that auto companies are FORCED to give them better fuel efficiencies. At least some of them are making an effort with the hybrids.
Here's an article: SUVs are trucks

gas is probably going to be $4+ a gallon before long. it's already $100 for a barrel of oil.
I can't believe people still buy SUV's
