Re: Maps of cancer clusters? Would you buy in a cancer cluster area?

If there was strong evidence that it was a cancer cluster area, then no.

It is a very personal choice that you have to think carefully about and make the best decision you can.

Not sure where you live but I found this about the Coram/Mt. Sinai/Port Jeff Station area:

June 2006 report

This also has a lot of (disturbing) information

I was looking specifically at Setauket/East Setauket, but found that most articles said the clusters "include Coram, Mount Sinai, Sound Beach, Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station and Setauket/East Setauket." Chat Icon One article listed a specific intersection near East Setauket as the hotbed--the intersection of Sheeps Pasture Rd. and Old Town Rd.

Breast Cancer Cluster Communities

Coram
East Setauket
Miller Place
Mt. Sinai
Port Jefferson Station
Port Jefferson
Sound Beach

"According to data collected from the cancer mapping component of the ongoing Cancer Surveillance Improvement Initiative undertaken by the NYSDOH this tri-town area on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County has a higher then expected – as much as a 50% increase in incidence — of breast cancer than would be expected in relation to other areas in New York State. Actually this tri-town cluster includes a total of seven ZIP codes encompassing smaller communities as well (see sidebar)."

I grew up in the Coram/port jeff station area. I know years ago people used to say the "lilco stacks" by port jeff harbor made people sick. I never heard of any other specific information about that area.
I do however remember closely following the Northville spill in east/south setauket. My stepdad had a business venture with an office at the time on what was called terminal road, now called Belle Meade.
I think it was swept under the rug as much as possible & somehow even local people seemed to forget so quickly what happened there.
I found a few things just by searching quickly, I'm sure you can find tons of stuff if you spend a little time

NYS

and to answer your question, no I would not consider buying in a known cluster area or an area with a known problem.

Re: Maps of cancer clusters? Would you buy in a cancer cluster area?

I'm already at a higher risk of breast cancer since I have not and will not be breast feeding a child.

Although there was a condition that caused contamintated drinking water in my neighborhoood a decade ago, there are no issues like the Northville problem that I found here.

Obviously, there are hazmat sites everywhere there is a gas station, so it's hard to get away from those. But you can avoid being close to areas with known past or present issues like Coram, East Setauket, etc.

Yes, that was more my question. We know to avoid being near gas stations, etc., and I know there are cancer hazards that come from everyday life, but to knowingly purchase a home in which we intend to live for quite a while, in an area with these cancer clusters...

I am struggling with this decision, but am leaning towards avoiding this part of the N. Shore entirely. I could never forgive myself if something happened to me or my family, and I knew of these much higher rates of cancer in the area.

Re: Maps of cancer clusters? Would you buy in a cancer cluster area?

You will find just as much stats and articles saying that there is no proof that its an environmental issue and more coincidence. After the bottled water thread- most people said that its safe to drink yet some of these articles suggest that its not safe. Northville is an issue but I've never heard of the intersection of old town and sheep pasture to be a specific problem- I live near there and no one on my block is sick to my knowledge!

It wouldn't effect my choice of a house- setauket is a great area- I just wouldn't drink the tapwater or eat dirt. the breast cancer clusters were studied and they said that there were no known environmental causes.

I grew up in Setauket

I would not move back there

of the 4 familes we were friends with

3 including mine had a cancer issue

Our homes were effected by Northville- we all lived with in 1 mile from there

Yes, the impression I got from the NYS DOH report that was posted is that they stated the rates were higher but that they didn't find any environmental causes.

Since we're going to be looking for a home soon and many of the areas mentioned are areas that we're planning on looking in, I'm not entirely satisfied with this as the ultimate answer, and am going to do more research into this...that's just what I gathered from the NYS report people are discussing.

They are inconclusive, yes. But I can't imagine it's just a coincidence - that Coram especially had such a higher instance. It's not just a couple of percentages either - that would definitely scare me off. Who knows if someone is being paid off somewhere along the line, if they're not testing for the right substances, whatever...? There are plenty of things we used to think were harmless and only found out decades down the road that they were dangerous.

There are so many towns to choose from, I wouldn't be devastated by crossing 5 of them off the list. You have to narrow it down somehow and avoiding known cancer clusters or previous major environmental issues is as good a reason as any to me. I wouldn't fault anyone for that.

Re: Maps of cancer clusters? Would you buy in a cancer cluster area?

I don't know...I know they say that there are no known causes, and I've taken enough grad statistics classes to know that we cannot say that correlation equals causation, but it just seems way too high a percentile to be a coincidence. Do I care about the reason, be it water, ground, or air, if the end result is significantly higher rates?

I'm going back and forth with this, but I can't get over how high the incidence rate is. It's way too high for pure coincidence.

Re: Maps of cancer clusters? Would you buy in a cancer cluster area?

I think doctors know very little as to why people get cancer. Some people smoke a pack a day their whole loves and never get lung cancer yet others get it and never smoked a day in their lives. I think the water has a lot to do with the cancer cluster even though they say it doesn't.

Today on the news they said you shouldn't sleep next to your cell phone- we've been using cell phones for twenty years and they didn't know that before!
