From what I haave heard they don't like Americans. You cant hold a pocketbook - a fanny pack is safer. Just dont look like a tourist

Re: I want to go to Paris in May/June
I have been to Paris alone many times --- never scared or nervous. Learn to say please, thank you and Do you speak English? in French and people will be polite and helpful.
The distrubances were in the poor outer neighborhoods --- so it would be like warning a tourist to NY not to go to Harlem or Bed-Sty for example. You wouldn't be going to those areas anyway.

I was there in 04 and the people were so nice. Not AT ALL like the reputation they have of not liking Americans.
Like Kara said, if you learn a few phrases they will be so appreciative if your trying to speak their language.

Re: I want to go to Paris in May/June
I would definitely go now! When I went to Europe, of all the countries we went to, believe it or not it was Italy where we found the rudest people, not France. That was just my experience though.
As far as safety concerns, if you were going to the middle east, then yes that would be alot less safe. But can you imagine how many American tourists there are in France right now? Americans go ALL the time. As for looking like a tourist...sorry but IMO nothing makes you look more like a tourist than a fanny pack ! Avoid the fanny pack and carry a small backpack. I wouldn't even be concerned about that. You just have to be as careful as you would be going to any other popular tourist destination - Hawaii, the Carribean, Australia, etc.
Go for it!!!

Wow, DH and I are planning a trip there also in May and I wasn't aware that it could be unsafe. I think that might be a little bit of hype.

Re: I want to go to Paris in May/June
I think you need to do more research on your own and not listen to someone who may not know what he/she is talking about.
People post trip reports on the TripAdvisor.com forums. That might be a good way to research the current climate for tourists. I really don't think there is any reason to not go.

I agree. Was there in the late '90s and the people were so nice! We learned a few phrases before we left, and almost everyone answered in English! I think the weather would be perfect too! All the flowers will be in bloom, perfect for pictures!
