Re: Tell me about your child's CPSE Service..

We had our CPSE meeting in December. It was very intimidating, with a good amount of people at a table discussing your child like they know him. But the key is bringing someone with you... definitely if DH can be there, or another family member for support, but if you can get one of his therapists there to really vouch for DS and demand the services that he needs, that will only help.

I was prepared for the worst, but it was really not a big deal. They go over all the evaluations, ask you a ton of questions and your opinions on what you want. I got what I wanted, but knew I would because Ryan MORE than qualified for speech.

Just bring all your paperwork and know beforehand exactly what services or additional evals you want.

Ryan was in a EI preschool class beforehand, but was then transitioned into the 5 day a week preschool program (he was 3 days before). The classroom setting has worked wonders for him.

Is Matteo getting services at home or in a school?

my best advice is to speak up and advocate for your child. if they aren't offering enough services than say that you are not comfortable or in agreement with what they are offering b/c .....
it really isn't a long or difficult meeting though and you'll be fine. write down all of your concerns and bring it in with you so you wouldn't forget anything.

Re: Tell me about your child's CPSE Service..

how old is your ds? e.i. (birth-3) is usually done at home but can be done at a center based facility (my ds gets feeding at home and ot, pt at a gym b/c that is what i wanted.) cpse is school aged children that can get services done at a school (you would have to find one, use the one in your school district or the commity can give you recommendations) or sometimes after school in the home.

How do they decide where they get services? I thought all EI was at home actually for the most part! He's been getting it in our home, speech, special instruction (which he was just discharged from), and PT. What do they do at Ryan's school? Is it 5 days for speech only? I had no idea Matteo would need OT but turns out b/c of his 'body awareness' and some sensory things. He tends to be all over the place sometimes.

They moved Ryan to a school setting since the at home was not working at all. Ryan needed more stucture and at home he just did whatever he wanted and did not listen to the therapists. His special instruction teacher brought this up at his 6 month evaluation and EI approved it for 3 days a week. Now that he is 3, he goes everyday.

It's really a regular pre-school curriculam, but Ryan is pulled for speech 3 times per week for 45 minutes, individual session, not group. All the children in his class are special needs (he is in a self contained room vs an integrated where half are special needs and half are not), OT, PT, speech, etc, so his speech is worked on all day really.

He goes from 11:30 to 3:30 M-F. He loves it and has really thrived and improved so much since starting.

I was telling the OT who came today that I think part of Matteo's problem is that he's had so many evaluations at home, he knows the drill and is tired of it. He had gone to school and the teachers said he sat and did craft and snack time. So I know he CAN tend to things, but when he's in his living room he feels like he doesn't have to. I didn't know that was an OT issue.

Matteo sounds just like Ryan.

Ryan is comfortable at home, and wasn't interested in attending to his sessions. Instead he was running around the dining table for 45 minutes, while I battled to get him to pay attention. So of course I would freak and be worried that he his attention is not there, and think the worst. Truth is, it was the wrong setting for him.

I would try the school for Matteo, or at least find out more about it. It sounds like he would really do well with it. Maybe it's not an OT issue after all.
