Re: Newsday Front Page-Jobs
That article annoyed me - those are all very low paying jobs in things like house keeping - not putting down people who clean houses/inns/etc - but when you hear the job market is going up, you think it MIGHT be in a career you were preparing for....

Oh and on TOP of the LITTLE pay these companies are offering, they ALL want a clean license. There are GOOD workers out there who do not have a clean license.
That may be, but honestly if I were a small business owner and I had the choice of a person with or without a clean license, I wouldn't hesitate to go for the clean history, especially in this market. I would not want the liability of someone who had not judged wisely in the past.
Oh, and regarding the article, it was in bad taste, imo. There are many families on LI with both parents out of work, where there are mortages to pay, etc. In most cases, kids straight out of school or college do not have the same responsibilities or debt and can get along easier on less money. There was a bad recession when I left school and I was willing to work at anything until there was an upswing and I could get something better. I am pretty sure it's what established my work ethic.

Re: Newsday Front Page-Jobs
I dunno...I didnt find the article to necessarily be in bad taste. I think it was more just to inform that people of all ages are having difficulties finding jobs these days. It stinks all around.

Re: Newsday Front Page-Jobs
I think this article was more focused at parents of these teens who are having trouble finding work. I have a 17 year old brother in law who hasnt even tried, so I don't feel bad for him.
Sorry for your husband who is having difficulty too but I guess like pp said, it is tough all around. Almost every industry and every level has been affected by this.
To play devils advocate though, these businesses will pay people less if they have people willing to work for less. Its the fundamentals of supply and demand. We have extra supply of out of work people now, so wages will come down. If you owned a small business and your sales were down 20% from last year, you would be happy that you could pay min wage this year instead of $10 an hour like you did last summer.
Unfortunately, this is affecting everyone. Good luck to your husband, I hope something comes through for him!
