Re: Camp Counselors & cell phones - anyone up for drafting an email?

Hey Barb, would you mind sharing your email? I've been alerted to the fact that one of the teen counselors in Alex's bunk is fond of texting on the job and I want to address it with the Director asap...

I'm sure there has to be a policy of some sort. That email was very good. I'm curious to see the response!

Ava is attending a Town Of Huntington Camp, and I have seen it myself! Not happy!

Re: Camp Counselors & cell phones - anyone up for drafting an email?

I was just thinking yesterday how ridiculous the texting has gotten. I went to the grocery store and the guy that was checking me out paused to check and reply to a text.

Also, I was getting a pecidure yesterday and the woman had to take 2 different calls and also texted twice in the middle of it.

It's really out of hand...Chat Icon

No reply yet but DH told me I was being THAT parent. I knew he would think it too. Ridiculous. Our daughter was lost in a potentially deadly situation last summer and I want them to pay better attention too the kids -that is overreacting? Chat Icon

Eh he thinks I overreact to everything. Pfft..

def not overreacting!!

Their phones should be kept in their lockers (or wherever they keep their stuff) no reason to even have them on them when they are working.

I am not trying to start trouble- AT ALL. I agree with your letter 100% and agree that texting is ridiculous. Partly why I won't send my daughter to Summer Rec here- my niece was a counselor last year, and said they all text all day long. But just wondering- why did you send Maddie back to that camp this year after last year's incident?

Re: Camp Counselors & cell phones - anyone up for drafting an email?

I want to say that your DH sounds like my DH. He takes things much more lightly than I do in general. In some ways it's good, in other ways, I go with my gut and it's not the barometer by which I measure the gravity of a situation. Truth is, cellphones and texting are distractions. Period. In a situation where you are entrusted to care for young children, you should be free of unnecessary distractions. Sure they aren't preschoolers but they are doing age appropriate activities which obviously needs proper supervision. I would think the adults in charge would not take this lightly and would want to know if this is going on. So I think you did the right thing. Definitely let us know what they say. I thought your email was well written, not the rantings of THAT parent.

I don't think you are being THAT parent in this case. Someone has to say something. You are not only looking out for your child but most likely ALL the children that are attending that camp! Every camp should have a mom like you!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Actually I haven't. I'm pretty angry about the lack of response on their part.

I'm even angrier that they pulled both of my children from their groups to ask them about their counselors being on their cell phones.

We have about 2 weeks left of camp. I think I'm done with this place. Now I have to work out where I will send them...I'm at a complete loss as I looked at 5+ camps in the area.

That was exactly what you wanted to avoid too since the kids love their counselors.
