1 full week of pd...?
Hi there! Just completed a week of pd on Friday! Is 1 week normal for a school? It seemed like a lot. Worth it, but a LOT.
One other question- what does a team leader do? I was voted the team leader of my grade ( ),but I feel like the more senior teachers in my grade were happy to give it up. Someone enlighten me please.

Not sure about team leader but I am in NYC and we have 2 days of pd before school starts. It is contractual.

1 week seems like a LOT! are you a new teacher? perhaps that is why? in my district, we only have to go one day boefre the kids. granted, most of us go in earlier to set up rooms and what have you, but we only have one day of PD. everything else is done during the school year or done for credit.
team/grade leader in my school basically serves as a liasion between principal and grade level teachers for hgrade level issues, sets up agenda for grade level meetings, leads grade level meetings, communicates with us all re: grade level issues.

Re: 1 full week of pd...?
This is your first year- and your team voted you to be their leader? That seems a bit off to me- how would you even know what to do as a leader?
Eta: In my school, the grade chair serves as liason to the rest of the school, is responsible for delegating all responsibilities re: field trips, graduation, special programs, etc., making agendas for grade level meetings, making sure that new teachers have what they need. I know there is more but I am spacing. I generally refuse to be the leader b/c I feel like I would forget stuff and mess it up!

Re: 1 full week of pd...?
Thanks for the replies everyone!
Yes, I am a new teacher- but the week long pd was required of the entire staff - not just new teachers.
My school is only 3 years in the making, so buy-in a critical.
I guess they voted me leader because there are only 6 of us in the group? I have no idea. But thanks for the input about the responsibilities! I think I am in over my head!!

Re: 1 full week of pd...?
i had a wk of pd in florida every year - it was great to get paid to set up the room and have school/grade meetings
when i was grade level chair i was responsible for delegating duties, i.e.secretary, field trips, etc. i also attended shared decision making meetings on behalf of my team
it was a lot of work, but it felt great to know everything that was going on.
good luck, i'm sure it'll all work out well

Re: 1 full week of pd...?
From what I have seen, most states outside of NY have a week pd. My school has 2 days for new teachers and two days for the entire staff.
Best of luck with the team leader position. I would definitely ask my principal to explain exactly what was expected of me in this position. I am surprised they would give this position to a brand new teacher, but that is JMO.
