1 hour glucose test- what to expect?

I have my test tomorrow morning. I should have asked but can I eat beforehand? How did you feel afterwards? How much blood is taken? I'm not great with the whole drawing-blood thing so any encouraging words would be appreciated!

Eating is up to your doctor--some say to fast, some say eating a light meal is OK. Mine said eat a light breakfast (a low-sugar cereal) beforehand.

It was nasty, and I felt icky after. Hard to explain, but very tired and draggy, and vaguely nauseous when I was drinking it.

The blood wasn't bad--just a vial or 2.

My 1 hour test is next Thursday and they told me i was not allowed to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before and my appointment is at 8am that thursday morning.

please call your doctor or the lab where you are supposed to take the test. they are the ONLY ones who can give you solid advice as to what to do before-hand...

i, much like a pp, was very ill the day of my 1 hour (after the fact).....but MANY people on this site felt just fine.

All Docs are different. Mine said I can eat a little b4 I had the drink then nothing to eat or drink after I drink the nasty stuff. Blood test went fine. They don't take a lot at all and it goes quick. I felt fine after.

Call your doctor and check what their practices are on eating before the test. Everyone seems different as to what their preferences are.

It shouldn't be bad - I just did not like the taste of the drink! I think the wait from the time I drank it until getting the blood taken was the worst for me. I so badly wanted to drink tons of water

U should be fine--the drink they gave me was cola flavored-and I believe they took a vile--I am the biggest baby with needles and I was fine--Bring a magazine or a book--Good Luck!!!

Thanks ladies! I called my doc and they said that eating a light something beforehand is fine. They only recommend fasting for the three hour. I'm happy to hear that it's only 1 or 2 vials. I can do that!

My doctor told me I could eat beforehand, just not anything very sugary or carby. They said to just eat protein or something before.

It is not that bad. Get the orange flavor it is the least bad. I've heard bad things about cola and lemon-lime from friends, but I guess everyone is different. I didn't think the orange was bad.

the whole test was pretty easy. I sat in a nice cushiony chair and read a book for an hour after I drank the stuff, then they took the blood and I left. It was no biggie. I don't like giving blood either so I just don't look when they put the needle in.
