1 month old screaming in carseat - what do I do?
My 1 month old has been screaming bloody murder every time he's in the car seat. He'll start off fine and fall asleep in it, but after maybe 20 minutes he wakes up SCREAMING. He turns bright red and won't stop screaming. He's also sweating and vey hot to the touch. Literally as soon as we take him out of the seat and hold him, he's fast asleep again.
Anyone esle's DC do this?? I'm worried that I'm never going to be able to run errands with him because every time I'm out or in the car with him alone he freaks. Is this normal? Please tell me it will pass...we've been having to pull over and hold him and then put him back in the carseat again every 10 minutes. Its getting rediculous!

Could the sun be in his eyes? Do you have a car shade?

We have tinted windows back there and the carseat shade over him, so I dont think its that.

Re: 1 month old screaming in carseat - what do I do?
Could it be that he's a little too snug in the seat? I remember being told by the officer who put in our seat to make sure the straps were tight, but there's a very fine line between tight enough and too tight. I know I was so nervous at first that I might have been overenthusiastic with the tightening! Maybe that's the issue?

i would double check that it's enough - we have tinted windows and a car seat shade too and the sun still got through, we needed the window shade.
it seems like he doesn't like being hot (although in infant car seats, i think that is a common occurrence). my DS would complain in his infant seat sometimes and he always seemed to feel better once i took him out and he cooled off.
i would dress him in lighter clothes - maybe just a short-sleeved onesie and pants or shorts - and keep a blanket on until he gets warm.

Re: 1 month old screaming in carseat - what do I do?
How about giving the baby a binky? Maybe that will help to soothe the baby......Sometimes it takes a little for them to get used to the motion. ETA>>> How's the temperature also in the car? Especially in the Summer months when the AC is on, it might be a bit colder for them. Also the tightness of the strap as another poster mentioned would be some things to consider. Best of luck

Re: 1 month old screaming in carseat - what do I do?
Alex was much the same... I absolutely dreaded getting in the car with her. Funny story - my brother came to visit me when she was 3 months old and I took him to lunch. On the car drive there she was so quiet that I actually pulled over to check that she was still alive because I was so used to her blood curdling screams in the car
It does get better, eventually, I promise

Turn up the music
DD HATED the carseat, stroller for the longes time. Would scream SO bad. It was just something she had to grow out of.
But music definitely helped. Try something intrumental

I suggest getting a mirror with a remote so that you can turn it on/off from the front seat. That was the only way we survived most car rides. FP makes a great one.

Same here. We couldn't do anything to change it.

I was going to suggest this-my neice likes bluegrass and my kids like XM Coffee House Also my friend gave me a CD called No More Crying-you could try that. Do you have a toy attached to the carry bar?

I have that one! But now that she's older, I have her loaded up with toys too to keep her occupied. She still does not like the carseat or car rides, but is better on shorter trips, like errand running. Even now at 7 months old, when we go out to the Island (we're in NJ), one of us has to sit in the back with her. I have a VERY hard time driving when she is hysterical, I get extreamly panicky. I have yet to do the drive from here to my IL's or my father by myself.

Honestly? Turn up the radio!!!
If his needs were met and he just is getting used to the fact that he is somewhere new and different, and nothing can be done, then I just turned it up and sang over his crying...

J- I feel. your. pain. Riley is the same way- even in the stroller. I'm convinced it's not the seat, or the car...it's just that she gets to a point that she MUST be held. She can be anywhere and this happens, it's usually when she's getting tired.
I did the same thing- I bought that mirror. Haven't installed it yet. I have a feeling it's another lost cause though for her...I put on music all the time (loudly!) in the car....even try white noise. Once she hits that point where she MUST get out...there's no getting her back unless I take her out. I've even tried toys...
The only time she's happy is right after a feeding, and then she may last about 20-30 minutes before she gets to that tired, I want to be held state. I consider myself lucky when she falls asleep but YES she gets mad hot in there and I feel just awful...the way she screams...
I hope your DD will grow out of it soon- or you find a solution that works ASAP!! Just wanted you to know I feel your pain!!!
oh and J...I do the same thing, sometimes stopping the car, taking her out and putting her back helps. But how many times can you do that?!?!
