1 month old today - has his days/nights mixed up, and ROLLED OVER in his crib last night?!
1 month old today Coincidentally, I was wide awake all night last night, just as I was in labor last month.
The past 3 nights, he's WIDE awake. Wants to play, snuggle, eat, etc...anything but sleep. After a few hours, he DOES get tired, but he fights it and won't close his eyes. He seems to have his days and nights mixed up. He's been FINE until these past 2 days - i have no idea what's going on and i don't like it!
Around 6am, I fed him and was rocking him - he was almost asleep, so i put him down in his crib. He slept soundly for 30 minutes then woke up "squeaking". He doesn't scream unless he's hungry (or being swaddled- he hates that), so i knew he wasn't hungry. I went in there and gave him the paci and then took the monitor back to my bed. I watched him kicking his legs and flailing his arms for a good 5 minutes, then he ROLLED OVER on to his stomach. I'm pretty sure that's not normal!
Any suggestions other than trying to keep him awake more during the day? we did that yesterday and it didn't help. The most he slept all day yesterday was a 3 hour stretch after eating 7.5oz.
Up until these past few days, his normal sleep schedule was anywhere from 3 to 5 hours at a time, sometimes longer at night. He usually eats about 6oz per feeding every 3-4 hours.
What happened to my baby?!?!
etd: to clarify his usual eating/sleeping

Keeping him up during the day will not help. The better he sleeps during the day, the better he will sleep at night.
I only swaddled my girls for bedtime - it was my way of differentiating between night and day. I also followed the EASY method during the day - Eat, Activity, Sleep, You. The activity was tummy time or reading a book and it was only for several minutes in the beginning and it gradually increased. Then, they would nap in the bouncy or swing - I did not have them nap in their bassinets/cribs for a couple of months. This is what worked for us, but you may find something totally different to do. Eventually they figure out their days and nights! Good luck in the meantime!
As far as the rolling over, it may have just been a fluke, that happened with DD #1 at about 3 weeks then not again for some time.

Do not keep him up during the day, it won't help. They need to sleep and it will probably just get him over-tired and cranky. I would really try to swaddle him at night. He may scream and fight while you swaddle him, but that is normal. Just pick him up and rock him until he gets sleepy and then put him down. Babies like the feeling of being swaddled. They usually don't like there arms and legs free. That could be why he is waking up. Also, have you tried a sound machine. I used this for DS and it really helped. If all else fails, try the swing. That always put DS to sleep. He took all his naps in his swing. DS used to mix his days and nights every once in a while. It just happens. You will see that as soon as you think you got a good sleep routine down, they will switch it up on you. Also, at 1 month you really can't expect an 8 hour night from them Yes, some babies sleep straight through the night, but most don't. A 5 hour stretch is good night sleep.
His rolling over probably scared him also. DS moved all over the place but didn't start rolling over until about 4 months.

Sleep begets sleep....don't keep him up during the day. Stretch out his feedings at least 3 hours....3.5 if you can.

Do not keep him up during the day, it won't help. It only only make him overtired and he will not be able to fall asleep, and/or will sleep very poorly.
I would swaddle him. Most babies have a love/hate relationship with it. They scream at first but will very quickly settle down and feel comforted by it.
To differentiate between day and night, I would usually have them nap in the swings, with the lights on, tv on, etc. Night time was dark and quiet. When they got up in the middle of the night to eat, it was done in very dim lighting and in the quiet.
At that age you really can't expect more than 3-4 hours of sleep at a time. (maybe 5-6 at the most) They need to eat very frequently. I know its so frustrating and sleep deprivation is awful, but it will get better.

Re: 1 month old today - has his days/nights mixed up, and ROLLED OVER in his crib last night?!
Thanks ladies... I guess we'll try the swaddle again. He's asleep (all stretched out) on my DH right now in nothing but a diaper and he's sweating! He's HOT all the time.
Thank God for my glider. I injured my back/neck during delivery - i have some bulging discs, and we suspect one of them is compressing a nerve. I get shooting headaches whenever I move my head to look down (i.e. - feeding the baby) and my hands have gone numb, making it very difficult to hold him at times.
My DH has to go back to work later this week, so I'm really trying to handle the nights by myself. Between the mixed up days/nights AND my back/neck, I'm having a really hard time.
He's such a good baby - no problems at all until this. We even drove to Virginia with him last weekend and he was an angel!

Re: 1 month old today - has his days/nights mixed up, and ROLLED OVER in his crib last night?!
Well, I go against the grain - Yael is a fabulous sleeper, so much so that she'll sleep the day away and then will be up all night eating, so I make sure she gets enough feedings during the day, so she'll sleep at night.
During the day I don't let her nap for more than 3 hours - I'll change her diaper, wake her up a little, feed her, and if she's still sleepy I'll let her go back to napping. I've done this for several weeks now, and she's been sleeping through the night, 6-8 hour stretches, for over a week now.
The key also, is to NEVER let her get overtired. I've noticed that she can't go for more than an hour, hour and a half, before she needs to go to sleep. If I wait any longer than that, she gets overtired and will fight sleep like a devil...
ETA - She started sleeping through the night when I started using the miracle blanket!

I would also suggest using the EASY method. We didn't start it until 2 months, but that is only because I had read about it then.
I also started a bedtime routine around one month too because DD had her days and nights mixed up. We would bathe her (once the stump came off of course), change her into pjs, bottle, book, bed. We made sure the room was dim and quiet. Also if she woke up for a feeding, we wouldn't have anymore than the night light on and kept talking to a minimum. That way she wouldn't thing that night time was "exciting".

DH and I just watched Happiest Baby on the Block.
Logan is currently swaddled tightly and asleep in his crib for the last 40 minutes. The longest sleep we had alllll dayyy today was 35 minutes, so you can imagine how overtired he is. And I am.
Here goes...

great success! he didn't break out and slept for 4.5 hours. Woke up, ate 5oz without fussing or delaying the feeding, now he's asleep again! My baby is BACK!

Swaddling is the bestest Before we put Yael in the miracle blanket she was sleeping 4-5 hour stretches. Now, she's sleeping 6-8 hour stretches, and last night, she went to bed at 9pm, and is STILLLLL asleep!!!

excellent!!! i'm going to get the miracle blanket today. we had one and returned it because he HATED it, but since I last posted, he woke up again after 3 hrs (poop diaper) ate, then went back down, but now I see him wiggling his left arm out of the SwaddleMe.
Up 2x - not so great, but this is still WAY better than the last 2 nights though.

Re: 1 month old today - has his days/nights mixed up, and ROLLED OVER in his crib last night?!
Remember, too, those few bad nights could have been a growth spurt.
From Kellymom: "Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less). Babies don't read calendars, however, so your baby may do things differently."
Yael has been through a few of them, and they last about 2-3 days, and during those times all she wants to do is eat, has trouble sleeping and is tremendously fussy (because her little tummy has trouble digesting all that milk!).
Growth spurts are BRUTAL, but thankfully only temporary!

What's the EASY method? Very curious- thanks!
Nic, the miracle blanket is just that- a miracle. But if Riley is hungry and is on the verge of waking, she can get her arm outta there!! It's quite funny. But usually it keeps her all snuggly and sleepy. I hope Logan sleeps better for you today! I'm having issues with naps with Riley...granted the nights aren't so bad, thank God, but it makes for a very overtired and cranky baby during the day!
This definitely sounds like a growth spurt to me!! It will pass!
