1 year old and the big pool -- wwyd?
I took DD in my mother's pool the other day - it's a big, inground thing with steps at the shallow end, where we stayed.
Anyway I thought later that maybe I should have floaties on Alex? I mean I wasn't afraid I would let go of her -- but -- I guess she could slip out of my arms??
Soooo, what do - or would - you guys do??

I don't think floaties would do a thing honestly. If they don't know enough to keep their heads up out of the water, they will still go face first into it. I think if you want something for safety just in case, your best bet is an actual life vest. If you want to be able to take her in but not hold her, one of those swim rings with the leg holes might be good, but as long as you are holding onto it the entire time. def not for letting go bc again, she can go forward and go face first into the water.

I always make my kids wear a vest at the pool... ACtually, at the community pool, no floatation devices allowed, but certainly in my ILs in-ground pool.

We had Logan at the pool in Disney - all shallow, but let's face it, 1 foot is deep for them.
We were just really careful to hold on to him. No life vest or anything.
But those were unique circumstances with lifeguards nearby.
I think for my IL's pool I'm going to get a vest for him.

Emma has been swimming a few times and I or Eric just held her. I did buy one of those baby boats with the canopy over top and will use that this Summer so she can float on her own (with me holding onto it of course). I think once she becomes more independent and walking (running away from me!), I will get a life vest.

Once he walks well It will be a life vest before then its a baby float, im WAY to scared to hold him and have him slip and me not get to him as quickly as I think I can.

I don't think you need floaties at all - they just make it easier on you - but if you hold on to her the whole time she doesn't need them - besides at her age your not going to be letting go of her anyway.

At that age the floaties are kinda big and in the way .. we have one of these tubes and my kids have just floated around in it with me.

I think I am going to get this Jen, very neat.
The pool has a lifeguard, and I also want her to LEARN to float - on her own, without being held because let's face it, when a kid falls into a pool it's not usually when they have flotation devices on. I want her to learn what to do in that case.
Maybe I will get this ring to just play in the pool with her, but take her out of it while I am holding her.
I guess we should just go to Saf-T-Swim!

These are a great idea but you still have to be real careful. DD was in it with DH and of course he wasn't as neurotic as I am and she ended up leaning face-first into the water. After that she was petrified to be in the water without being held.

See I do NOT want her to get scared of the water -- but I do want her to respect it, KWIM?
Hm well looks like we are going over there today and no flotation device...

Went to the pool again today and Jen the lifeguard GAVE us that floatie thing that you posted!!
One of the moms just bought it and her DS wouldn't stay in it, so she told him to give it to someone.

I like the idea to teach children to have flotation devises on them from the beginning so they don't fight it later.
