Go to the website GeniusBaby.Com Its awesome and they have very unique gifts and a lot are rated from magazines, have won awards, etc! We just celebrated my DD's first birthday and we got a few things from there from my aunt who is very picky! One GREAT gift was:

well obviously he couldn't use it now, but a little tikes car, buggy, ride on toy, ball popper, etc.

ds loves the tonka little trucks as well as the little people trucks... please avoid the abtting tee that fisher price makes... nothing like handing a 1 year old a weapon... my poor puppies
