10 true-crime stories to check out when you’re done binging ‘Making a Murderer’
Saw this on The NY Daily News website.
Thought I would share incase anyone is interested in checking out something else.
I already saw The Central Park Five and Dear Zachary and both were excellent. Highly recommend it.
1- "The Jinx"
This HBO crime exploration is celebrated by viewers not only for its binge-worthiness, but also for its aftermath.
The miniseries investigated the deaths of three women, all with possible ties to real estate heir Robert Durst.
It marked the first time Durst spoke on the allegations and it’s available on HBO Demand.
2- "The Imposter"
This twisted case will satisfy those on the hunt for a story almost too crazy to be true.
It tells of the deception of a young French con-man who tricked a family into believing he was their long-missing son.
The 2012 documentary examined how one charming man could dupe a family desperate for answers.
3- "The Central Park Five"
1989, one high-profile sexual assault made New Yorkers question the entire criminal system.
Known as the Central Park jogger case, five black and Latino teens were convicted of raping a white woman.
It would take 13 years for police to learn the wrong guys were behind bars.
The city soon found themselves fielding racism accusations and a lawsuit seeking almost $100 million.
4-“Serial”
Before Netflix’s crime story was all the rave, there was “Serial.”
Though not a TV show, the crime obsession of 2014 is an obvious choice.
In its first season, the podcast introduced viewers to the addictive story of Adnan Masud Syed, who was sentenced to life for killing his ex-girfriend.
While the internet continues to question his innocence, “Serial” is now in its second season with a story about Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
The American soldier stirred up controversy when he was held for five years by the Taliban and currently faces charges of desertion.
5- "West of Memphis"
It’s almost eerie how much this documentary parallels “Making a Murderer.”
Like the viral hit, it documents the wrongful imprisonment of a town’s outsiders.
It also features a coerced confession elicited from an unsuspecting teen with low IQ — much like the one viewers suspect Brendan Dassey endured.
Adding to the strange factor in this case is its occurrence at the height of the Satanic Panic.
6- “Dear Zachary”
It’s unlikely this touching tribute won’t result in tears.
And, it’s especially emotional due to its close ties to the filmmaker, Kurt Kuenne.
Kuenne’s friend was murdered by his ex-girlfriend in 2001.
The accused murderer then revealed she was pregnant and a custody battle with an unexpected ending followed.
7- “The Cheshire Murders”
This heart-wrenching story explored a gruesome murder that rocked a small town.
In 2007, a Connecticut husband and father was bound and left helpless as his wife and two daughters were sexually assaulted.
The chilling ordeal ended with arson and left only Dr. William Petit as a survivor.
The HBO documentary investigated the case, while showing the strength of a man determined to get justice.
8- “A Murder in The Park”
With 48 hours left until his execution, death row inmate Anthony Porter was saved by the investigative work of a journalism class.
Soon, another man confessed and took his place behind bars, but he too was eventually released.
So, did the state have the right guy all along?
That’s the question this documentary tried to solve as it delved into the real killer behind a double homicide in Chicago.
9- “Prophet’s Prey”
This gripping story exposed the abuse of the cult-like Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints.
It showed the abusive power from the group’s leader Warren Jeffs continued even while he was in prison.
The Showtime documentary talked to former Church victims and revealed the nightmarish lengths Jeffs went to brainwash his followers — and create an organization worth millions of dollars.
10- “The Staircase”
As one critic states: “It was Serial before there was Serial.”
This 2004 miniseries delivered the same all-consuming questions that “Making a Murderer” sucessfully raised.
It goes back to 2001, when Michael Peterson called police and said his wife had fatally fallen down some stairs.
Even though friends said the pair had a picture-perfect marriage, Peterson was soon behind bars and discussed across the nation.

Re: 10 true-crime stories to check out when you’re done binging ‘Making a Murderer’
If Making a Murderer upsets you, West of Memphis will too. I was so angry watching it. I tried reading the book based on the case a while ago and had to put it down because I was so upset.
