Me, too. But why is Tess of the D'Urberville's listed twice?

Re: 100 most important books according to the BBC
I'm an English teacher, so I've read many of the books on this list.
I am perplexed by the fact that Bridget Jones' Diary is on the list.

I am perplexed by the fact that Bridget Jones' Diary is on the list.
I get that this is a list of "most important" books, not "best" books. So I'll forgive The DaVinci code because, while a poorly written book (IMO), I could see how its theories might be important to some people.
But Bridget Jones' Diary is neither important nor good, so that one's definitely a stumper.
I also don't understand the love for Pride and Prejudice - in general, not just in this list. What am I missing? I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and even with zombie mayhem it was still terribly boring.

Oh, no! Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorites! Of course, to each his/her own, but I can't find anything boring about it. I think Austen just has the best sense of humor, and I totally appreciate her perspective on the class system and society's obsession with marriage in general. (Can you tell I teach this book every year? )

Aw, thanks. I actually "made" Dh reread it a couple of years ago because I couldn't allow him to be married to me and not love it. He claimed to like it MORE this time, so I guess that's something? (I do think I somehow brainwash my students into loving it... they make t-shirts every year with a P&P quote on the back... weirdos. )

I know this is an old thread...but I had it in my notebook and figured others might want to see it. I go back to it when I'm looking to read something I should've read in HS lol

Re: 100 most important books according to the BBC
14 Complete Works of Shakespeare - 98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare -
and, as AP mentioned...
12 Tess of the D’Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy - 26 Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, -
Really?.... the books are THAT good, that they're listed twice?
You'd think a list about literature would have had someone double-check the list.....
"The Complete Works of Shakespeare" is at least 36 plays... that sort of messes with the "100 most important books" count.....

Re: 100 most important books according to the BBC
59 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night - Mark Haddon -
This book was seriously horrendous. I can't believe they listed it above the Count of Monte Cristo!

!
I think given the rise of Autism, this is a very important book for ppl to read. It gives the reader real inssight into the mind of an autistic person. I wish I could MAKE my staff read it!!
