$1000 Reward for information on Maximus
The SuffolkCountySPCA is offering a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for tying a dog to a tree in Brentwood, NY, and setting fire to it.
The dog, a male pit bull, was found on Thursday July 12th with second and third degree burns over 60% of his body; severe third degree burns of his face and ears; degloving wounds of his upper palate including the loss of canine and incisor teeth. The dog also had puncture wounds of his neck and emergency veterinarians treating him detected an odor of gasoline on his hair. Emergency Veterinarians have named the dog "Maximus," according to Chief Roy Gross of the SuffolkCountySPCA. "Even after what he's been through, Maximus still tries to wag his tail when he sees people enter his isolation area," said Chief Gross. Maximus hasn't lost his bond with humans. Emergency care personnel said that Maximus is trying to eat on his own and wants to play with other dogs when he sees them.
SPCA Veterinarian Dr. Charles Greco said that Maximus' condition is guarded and that emergency care personnel have done an excellent job stabilizing him, considering his condition and severe burns.
Anyone with information is asked to call the SuffolkCountySPCA at 631-382-SPCA. All calls will be kept confidential.

Re: $1000 Reward for information on Maximus
I hope someone turns the animal who did this in to get that $$$.
I just mailed out a $100 check to help pay for his care. I am heartbroken at the inhumanity and how a helpless creature could be treated this way.
What comes around goes around to whomever did this...

The punishment will never fit the crime. I can't ever understand how anyone can be so cruel.

ITA, there is no punishment worthy of t his crime, other than doing the same thing to the person who did this to Maximus. sadly we live in a society where animals are taken for granted and the animal who did this to the poor thing will get what a fine? maybe 30 days in jail? just not enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's so sick.

He didn't make it ..
Maximus Succumbs to Burn Injuries July 17, 2007
Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, regret to announce the passing of Maximus, the two-year-old pit bull mix who was chained to a fence and burned in a horrific act of animal cruelty, last Thursday evening (July 12) in Brentwood.
Maximus suffered burns to more than 60 percent of his body, leaving his skin raw and his outlook grim. Maximus succumbed to his injuries early this morning at the Veterinary Medical Center in West Islip.
"Our entire staff and Maximus' physician Linda Loudon made every effort to save him." Dr. Reed Zaroff, owner of the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, said. "Everyone at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island was shocked by this crime and heartbroken at the loss of Maximus."
Maximus passed away shortly after 12 a.m. today, Dr. Loudon said.
"The trauma was too much for Maximus to handle," Dr. Loudon said.
Maximus was brought to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island last Thursday by the Town of Islip Animal Shelter, which was contacted by a concerned citizen. Loudon contacted Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption, located in Port Jefferson Station, which agreed to assist the medical center in funding Maximus' treatment. From that time until his passing, the Maximus had been under the constant care of the staff at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.
Donations are still being collected to defray the costs of Maximus' treatment. For information, contact the Veterinary Medical Center at 631-587-0800 or online at www.vmcli.com. Contact Save-A-Pet at 631-473-6333 or www.saveapetli.net.
