11th grade English Regents Exam

Anyone happen to know when it's given? My stepson is in 11th grade and says he has his English Regents next week - mid-term week. Doesn't make sense to me that it's in the middle of the year. I'm guessing he's mistaken? But maybe they've changed things for some reason?

11th grade English Regents Exam

Regent's for High School are next week, and also again the last week in June. It's like that every year. As far as what tests are given, I'm not sure, but it's always those two weeks. Imagine my surprise when my son was in 9th grade, and let me know 2 weeks before that he had the entire week off at the end of January (he didn't take Regent's in 9th grade).

I know that Regents exams for various classes are given at these 2 times of the year, but 11th grade English is taken over the entire school year, so why would they give the Regents for that class in January?

My school gives it in January as do a lot of other schools. Many have different reasons for doing it this way. My students are required to take the common core exam in June so instead of taking two English regents in the same month, they are taking the easier one in January. It also gives some students the opportunity to take it again if they fail in January while still taking 11th grade English. The test is on Monday the 26th in the afternoon.

So they take it now and again in June? Or they just take the CC exam in June? Is the CC exam different from the Regents? Thanks!

Because it doesn't only include content they are learning this year. It includes content from 9th and 10th grade also. Our school takes it on Monday also. Common Core exams are different than Regent's. If the child doesn't pass the Regent's, they don't graduate, so that is probably why they offer it twice a year.

There are two kinds of CC "exams" - the ones that are always in the media that many students "opt out" of, and the state exams that are being altered to be in aligned with CC.

As an example of the latter, ELA and Math have a Common Core "version" of the Regents that schools are phasing in. Those are normal Regents exams and right now students have the option to pass either one, at least in my DOE school.

So "Common Core" means a lot of things.

Mostly just a big headache.Chat Icon

They take it now and the CC in June. This is the last year for the old regents and going forward it will only be the common core version of the English Regents. We give both to our students and take the higher of the two grades. Next year they will not have that option. It will only be the Common Core English Regents. The CC version is very different from the current regents.
