Re: 12 month bloodwork question

I think it's fine to hold off, it's only a few months. But you can also go somewhere else or ask for another phlebotomist at the same location. Believe me, they are not all alike. I took my oldest son when he was 12 months and the person clearly was new or really bad at ther job bc it was an awful experience for both of us and we both left in tears without getting it done. It took me a long time to bring him again but I went to another location and all was fine. Where are you located? bc there is a phlebotomist in the Quest near me in Massapequa that is phenomenal, she's drawn blood from all my kids without a single whimper and other parents have raved about her as well.

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

My Dr gave me my script for DS’s 12 month bloodwork in DECEMBER and I still haven’t done it! I told her this just last week (we were in for a sick visit) and she said don’t worry wait until he is feeling better and the script is good for 1 year!!!!

So waiting a few months isn’t a big deal – when is your next well visit?

DS had his CBC and lead level done at his 10 month visit. It was a heel stick and a finger prick in the office.

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

DS had his 12 month bloodwork done shortly after his 12 month visit.

They took blood from a vein in his arm and surprisingly enough, he didn't even flinch! Chat Icon He just looked at the woman, then looked at his arm, then at the woman, then at his arm. I was amazed! Chat Icon

They did check his lead level and it was fine. He was anemic, however and had to go on vitamins that had extra iron.

We had DS's bloodwork for lead done early bc we are in a new house which is really old and he was worried about peeling paint in the basement.

DS was 6 months old, and he had the same reaction. Basically none. he was fine with it.

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

DS had his 12 month blood work done at 10 months (August). Vein in arm - 6 vials - not a flinch.

I just took him last Thursday for another test - again not a flinch.

We went in Forest Hills to LIJ Labratories on Austin Street. Amanda is the woman who does it and she is amazing. Both times she got it right the first time!

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

We had it done at a year and they took from the vein. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I'm the one that got most upset! Chat Icon

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

I finally took DD last week and she will be 18 mos on Friday Chat Icon Chat Icon .

I went right to the lab in Good Sam hospital. We were in and out in about 5 minutes. There were two nurses and they were awesome. They found the vein right away and quickly filled up 2 vials.

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

We did it at 12 months. The tech had no problem getting a vein with one of those baby needles. Not to say that DD didn't cry but it was over quickly.

We did a heel prick as well at his 12 month visit - Athan didn't even blink an eye. He kept staring at the little vial filling up with his blood.

DS had this done at 12 months at a lab. They took blood from a vein in his arm, but it really wasn't a big deal. The woman who did the bloodwork was very good with him, and he was too busy staring at the needle device and flirting with her to get upset. I think he found it all kind of fascinating actually.

Re: 12 month bloodwork question

we just did Landon's early at almost 11 months due to his cnstant diarrhea the ped. pushed it up and added a few additional tests. It was tough because they had to go in a vein in his arm like they would for an adault. They only had 1 tech working that day so I had to hold him down and hold his arm straight. It was difficult. My adivce would be to call before you go to make sure they have 2 techs working.
