12 Pregnancy Myths Worth Ignoring...
12 Pregnancy Myths Worth Ignoring Posted by Simeon Margolis, M.D., Ph.D.
It's not surprising that a large number of myths have arisen regarding the unique challenges associated with pregnancy.
Dr. Robert H. Shmerling, a physician at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, has unearthed the following sample of 12 pregnancy myths that he says can be safely ignored. I've never heard of any of these myths; but then, I've never been pregnant.
1. The worse your morning sickness, the more likely you are to have a girl. (Dr. Shmerling does point out, however, that several studies have shown that women who are hospitalized for morning sickness are slightly more likely to deliver a girl.) 2. If you raise your arms above your head while pregnant (as when hanging up clothes on a clothesline), the baby will get the cord wrapped around its neck. 3. If you get a lot of heartburn during pregnancy, your baby will have a thick head of hair. 4. Avoid sleeping on your back; or, always sleep on your left side. 5. To keep your unborn child safe, avoid sex and exercise during pregnancy. 6. You should not touch a cat while pregnant. Women are indeed advised not to handle their cat's litter while pregnant because a cat's stool may carry a parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis, a serious infection in the mother and a possible cause of deformities in the fetus. However, other activities, such as petting your cat or allowing it to sit on your lap, are not prohibited. If you want complete peace of mind about this, you can have your cat tested for toxoplasmosis. 7. If you are pregnant, you cannot have x-rays and should avoid microwaves and computer terminals. Excessive or needless radiation should always be avoided, pregnant or not, but you should follow your doctor's recommendations for x-rays that are necessary. Modern microwave ovens and computer terminals do not expose the fetus to harmful radiation. 8. Don't take a bath if you are pregnant. 9. If the weather is stormy or the moon is full, you are more likely to go into labor, even if you are weeks away from your due date. 10. Avoid spicy foods — they can trigger labor before you are ready. 11. Avoid bumpy car rides — they can trigger labor; or, labor can be triggered by being bumped in the abdomen or by lifting groceries. 12. You can determine your baby's gender by the position of sexual intercourse when the baby was conceived, and by how your baby is situated in the womb.

Actually, I read somewhere recently that the heartburn myth seems to have some validity (can't remember where, maybe pregnancy magazine)? But yes, I've heard the other things don't affect the baby much or at all.
Thanks for posting!

I'd be careful of the sleeping on your back one.....
And the heartburn one was right on the money for me! I've never had it before Lily, and haven't had it since - but everyday of my pregnancy I had heartburn and she came out covered in hair!

As for the heartburn...I'd almost think it was true (in my case it has happened twice!) except I've known lots of bald babies born to moms who suffered with some heartburn.
As for the back, some women are TERRIFIED to do it AT ALL...if you read between the lines you realize they mean do it if you have to/need to. Yes, there are medical instances where you are put on your left side and it lowers your blood pressure. I'll be honest, I slept on my back the final 8 weeks because I couldn't get any sleep any other way. In my first pregnancy, no one told me NOT to sleep that way ever and so I did. Both of my children were/are healthy. I just can't sleep on my side, I'm normally a belly sleeper.

My ob said the heartburn thing is just a coincidence if it happens.
Andrew was very bald and didn't have an ounce of hair on him and I had the worse heartburn EVER!!!!!!

I think it is just coincidence. My mom said she had wicked heartburn with both me and my sister and we were both bald!

Re: 12 Pregnancy Myths Worth Ignoring...
I agree with all of them I've slept on my back throughout 2 pg's, Gianna is perfectly okay, and I am sure #2 will be too. I would rather sleep, my body tells me when i shouldn't sleep on my back.
The heartburn/hair thing, I had heartburn bad with gianna in the 3rd trimester and she was born with Rod Stewart hair, this pg, I had heartburn since day after I conceived, we shall see in 2 days!!

Re: 12 Pregnancy Myths Worth Ignoring...
That is a great list but I think some of them have a minor ring of truth to them even if they are not completely true. Such as the back thing - for some people it is a problem but not others - however you don't have to lay on your left side.
BTW I had bad heartburn and she was born with a lot of hair, my mom had none and I was born almost bald.

Re: 12 Pregnancy Myths Worth Ignoring...
I think they're trying to say it's not dangerous sleeping on your back. Towards the end of my pg though it was not possible. Everytime I rolled on my back I felt like there was an elephant sitting on top of me so I was forced to sleep on my sides.
