For my ultrascreen (at 12 weeks) I had an internal and external due to the fact that they couldn't get the images they needed externally.

Yes. They will likely try externally first. Even my 8 week was external because they could see what they wanted to see. If they have trouble, they will then go internally.
ETA: I still don't have much of a belly...just chub.

I don't have a visible belly, the baby is so low right now, right around ur pelvic bone they do it externally but mine pressed hard to get a clear pic, I was sore the next day
