13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
Has anyone done any of these? There is one in NYC on April 2nd. I didn't get into the NYC half, so I'm hoping to do this one. I just want to make sure my knee is fully recovered before I sign up. But I did 3 miles today and so far so good! Anybody else interested in this one?

YAYYY! I'm gonna wait two more weeks and then register. My knee still feels fine after this mornings' run, so hopefully I'm back on track!

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
I thought about it (still am) but I'm running the L.I Marathon one month later...I really want to run it in under an hour so I'm worried if I do this one I won't be in the best shape to get the time I want. I'm so conflicted!

I'm thinking of doing both too. I did LI last year, so I want to try 13.1 this year...but I also want to break my time from last year at LI. Decisions, decisions

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
I was aiming for LI to be my 1st half - that's in May - would this one be better to do? Would it be crazy to do both if I'm brand new to this?

Haha yes I meant 2 hours! 1 hour would be a little extreme!

I would stick to one. After a half you're SORE. I had trouble going up and down stairs for about 2 days. It's definatly possible to do both within a month of each other, but (IMO) not if you have a particular goal in mind. If you don't reach that goal during the first one, it will be much tougher to run the second.

I would've been very impressed, 13.1 in under an hour. You could totally break 2 hours! I did it in Oct for the first time.

Thanks! It sounds as if you are doing great with what you're doing from reading your posts - mixing the running with weight training. I did not overtrain by any means, I have such limited time and rarely went over 25 miles per week. In fact, many weeks, I barely got in 20 miles. For me, I just find my body does better by not overdoing the mileage. On the same note, I made sure to do enough so I'd be prepared. When I trained for the half, here is what an average week looked like. Just note that I have my gym membership on hold until I can commit to more days there. With 2 children ages 1 & 2, right now, working out at home is best for me.
Monday - weights - usually did one of the Jillian Michaels DVDs
Tuesday - speed interval run on treadmill (4-5 miles total). I would alternate a tempo run one week, with an 800 meter interval run the next.
Wednesday - weights - DVDs
Thursday - run at race pace (the pace I'd like to run the race at, for about 4 miles)
Friday - off day
Saturday - long run (longest was 12 miles, did about three 9-milers, one 10-miler)
Sunday - 2-3 mile recovery run
I also did pilates DVDS 3-4 times per week at night.
HTH....

Thanks for sharing this - I feel this is a very doable training schedule for me. I work full time - sometimes 50 hours a week, teach Zumba, and have a 3 yr old. I thought I was crazy even thinking of training for a half. This makes me feel better!!!!

No problem! It is definitely doable and you're NOT crazy to consider and train for a half! Sometimes less is more - not that I'm promoting "undertraining", but for me, I've found that I ended up with better race times when I didn't run 6 days a week and overdo the mileage. If you teach Zumba, that's an AWESOME workout for your crosstraining!!

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
Thank you for sharing your workout schedule! I always love seeing what everyone else is doing. I pretty much run about 5 days a week, averaging about 30 miles per week. I cross train once a week (or more if I'm too sore to run) and strength train about 3-4 times a week. Right now i'm really making speed and speed workouts (1x/week) a priority. I do see myself getting faster!
According to the Macmillion calculator, with my last 5 mile run, my estimated Half finish would be 2:02! So Im getting there!

That's great. You have 5 months, plenty of time. And you will break 2, I ran the LI Half last May in 2:03 then ran Diva in Oct in 1:53. So definitely a probability with your mileage.

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
Wow those are AWESOME times!!!
How long have you been running for?
I just started last December so I've only been running a year but I've gotten into it so much. I also want to improve on my 5k and 10k times as well!

Thanks - About 7 years. I did run years ago, just for about 2 years, and only short races. Then I took a long time off, just because I sort of lost interest and was busy. Got back into it in 2004 when my brother starting asking me to run and persuaded me to run the LI Half that year - I had only run as far as 7 miles, and only once....but he said he just wanted the company, his friend backed out and thought I should just try it since he thought I could do it since I worked out a lot at the gym at the time (my brother runs pretty fast, so he offered to run slow for me). Anyway, I finished, but not with an impressive time. After that, I started training the right way....ha ha.
Btw - do you do all your running outside? I think you can definitely improve your 5k and 10k times. You just started running a year ago, you're doing awesome yourself!! Most people I know starting out are not already up to the point of breaking 2 hours in a half, unless they are men who always seem to be able to run faster no matter what LOL....
I PR'd in my last 5k a few weeks ago. Now I wonder if that was a fluke and if I can even tough that time again ha ha. The winter series in Jan might be good if you enjoy running the cold; good PR courses....

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
Wow you've been running awhile!! Thats impressive you ran a half with only 7 miles under your belt before that!
I alternate between running outside and the treadmill. I despise the cold so lately it's been the treadmill. I pretty much trained for my entire first 10k on the treadmill alone actually! Once the weather gets nicer I'll be back outside more (I usually run in Eisenhower Park). I also like the treadmill because since I'm already at the gym its easier to do my weight training after a run.
I really think I'm going to be setting a PR veryyyy soon next time I run a 5k. I was supposed to during the Seaford hot chocolate but it just didn't happen.

Re: 13.1 Series (half marathon in NYC)
With races, it's all about how you feel that day. Sometimes even when you train perfectly and know you are set to PR, if you are a little off that day, it could affect you. Unfortunately!!
I do a lot on the treadmill also. I run at 5:30am, so it's tough to be motivated to go run in the dark alone! However, I try to do at least 1-2 runs per week outside. I did the bulk of my LI Half training on the treadmill last year too.

Not at all! I train alot on the treadmill. However, I highly reccomend you do some outdoor runs to get used to road running. Your body should be used to the impact. Also you can become accostumed to having a set speed when you use the treadmill. You can definatly wait until the weather gets warmer and then try to get at least one run per week outside.

No....as missfabulous suggested, see if you can try to throw in some outdoor runs. I know of many, including myself, who have run their best times after doing most of their training on the treadmill.
