14 months old and only 3 words?
Just curious - any other 14 month olds have only a couple of words under their belt? DS is almost 15 months and really only says 3 words. Everything else is babble.
I should mention that he JUST started walking finally at the begninning of the month. I think I remember reading that walking and speech come at different times. Or that kids work on them seperately. Is that true?
Thanks - I was just reading the EI post thinking that that might be us in the next couple of weeks

That is not unusual at all. I'd wait until the 18 month mark to consider an EI evaluation.

Totally agreed!
DS said alot in his own language at 14 months but at 17 months his language exploded and he started repeating EVERYTHING. Now at 20 months I he talks in sentences...

I would wait a few more months too. Rylan will be 17 months on the 28th and he doesn't say anything at all. I will be calling in the next week or so but I don't think you have anything to worry about yet.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
Peyton is 16 months and has a major word explosion in the past 2 weeks. She was only saying about 4-5 words and now suddenly she is repeating the TV and her sister. She has new words almost daily. BTW DD#1 did not say almost anything until she was closer to 2. I was worried but the Dr was not. Turned out She was just a late talker.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
Erik has about a dozen words now (15 months) but at this age, Ella only had 3. She exploded at 18 months, and hasn't stopped since. Her comprehension was always there but she didn't have many words. Now she talks in complete complex sentences.
I wouldn't worry yet.

I wouldn't worry now. DD probably said the same amount then but now at 17 months she says well over 30 and will repeat a lot more. There truly was a sudden explosion and everyday there seems to be a few more.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
if you child has any words, and understands what you say, EI won't approve services at 18 months. my DD is almost 22 months and has no words at all right now. but at 18 months didn't qualify because she understands everything and can respond, just without words. she points, grunts, grabs fingers to drag you to something. all communication. until age 2, they don't expect alot of words at all. we're stuck waiting until 24 months because the 21 month checklist isn't that much harder than 18 so we know we won't qualify for it either.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
Jacen only says a few words. Ummm... he says Car, Truck, Ba-ba (bottle), ball, nana (banana), dada and that might be it.
He has said other words before... Hi, Yellow, mama, no, etc... but he hasn't said them in a while.
I wouldn't worry about it. They have their word explosion at 18 months i think. So i would wait until then and see where he's at.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
DS is 14 months as well and doesn't have many words. He'll try to repeat some words but doesn't initiate them - unless I just don't understand them! I'm not worried yet, mostly because I know he understands a ton! So much more than I though possible! We are already spelling BIKE because when he hears it he whines to go out for a ride! He knows what he wants and conveys it pretty easily which probably doesn't help his verbal communication. So your your little one isn't the only one not talking yet!

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
Nina is 18 months tomorrow and still only says a few words. The ped. is not worried because Nina babbles a lot, points and understands 99% of what we ask her. The ped. said not to stress it at all. If at 24 months she still isn't talking much, then we will look into it, but the other things are more important than speech at this age.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
When my son was 14 months old he did not say ANY words. When he was 18 months old - same thing. I posted and thought about EI, but decided to give him some time and wait until he was 2.
Well, I swear the date of his second birthday, it was like a switch was turned on. He not only said one or two words, but pretty much went right to sentences. He talks up a storm and doesnt stop.
I think some children are just late bloomers.
AND, my son is incredibly smart. All those months of him not talking, I was worried he would be "behind". But his brain was still absorbing EVERYTHING, like he was just playing a trick on us.
He was saying his ABCs about a month after he started talking and was singing complete kids songs not even 2 months after.
He was always more of a physical child and I think that just took his concentration away from wanting to speak. My daughter was talking sentences on her 1st birthday, but she was the kid of baby who wanted to sit and read books all day long or watch education TV shows and stuff.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
DS just started walking at 16 months and started to say more words around the same time....and he's fine. He's 8 months now. He says more words but still a lot of babble.
His older brother walked at 14 months and said a lot more by now. Different kids. 14 months is still little. I wouldn't worry too much, give it a little more time. If there's no improvements by 2 then maybe there's something going on but I'm sure DC is fine. I always go by what they understand at this age rather than what they are saying. JMO

See? DS has NO interest in TV shows at all. I put on Sesame Street, Dora, anything kid-related and he could care less. So we don't turn it on anymore. I'm thinking maybe I should try to push the educational tv a bit more? Sit and watch with him maybe?
Glad to know though that he's not the only late language bloomer. Thanks, everyone

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
I've got to be honest, having 3 words at 14 months is hardly a "late bloomer". My DD didn't have more than 5 words until she was 18 months old- and I' a speech therapist!
In the meantime, she was babbling up a storm and was able to follow directions/identify people/things (she'd point to my DH when asked, "Where's daddy?") so I knew she was perfectly normal.
The range of what is typical is VERY broad from 12-18 months.

Re: 14 months old and only 3 words?
I was worried for my DS too at his 15 month ped visit. I asked the ped and she said as long as he understands you (he totally does) she doesn't care if he doesn't talk until 3. He actually communicates to us very well just not using words from the English language. Now that being said, 3 seems too long away but I looked at DS and noticed a few things.
First, he can literally scale a wall and in two seconds he will be on top of my dining room table. He walked at 11 months and hasn't stopped moving since. He does say a few words and says DD's name, Alexa, extremely clearly which is not an easy word to say. He's also doing things from the charts of age appropriate milestones that are beyond his 15 months.
So that being said, I think he's just waiting to perfect his speech and in the mean time is working on perfecting other skills. DD's speech therapist said as long as his receptive language is there he's doing fine.

Does he seem to have a favorite charcter from a show? DS seemed to gravitate toward Mickey Mouse early on and now at 16 months goes crazy when he see him. Maybe you can see if DS has an interest in something like trucks, cars or a character and see if he tries to communicate his excitement to you.
