15 month old and independent play?
DS is 15 months old and while he enjoys playing with us, often he disappears and plays by himself for an hour at a time. DH and I were in the living room, and DS just left and went into his room. 15 minutes later I went in, and he was in there playing with his trucks. I sat on his floor and tried opening a book to read to him, or play trucks, but he seemed to want to play alone, so after 15 minutes I left. Now it's a half hour later, and he's been in there an hour playing. I went down the hall to check on him and he slammed the door in my face (I taped over the lock so he can't lock himself in, BTW). Is this normal? He enjoys our company I think, and comes over for a snuggle, but he really likes playing alone.

Re: 15 month old and independent play?
DD is 15 months and I WISH she would play by herself more. She will sometimes go in her room and look at books or play with her megablocks set by herself but usually after about 5 minutes, she will come looking for me.

I think your DD is the norm. DS was always loved and taken care of, and we never ignored him at all, and one of us or a family member is home with him every day, so he gets only 1:1 attention, so I don't really understand it. I guess it's just personality.

DS does play by himself a lot. He doesn't like playing with us too but will sit with his books and read for a while and etc... I think it is a good thing that they can play by themselves.

Beth, I think that is awesome that Will plays by himself and doesn't need to be entertained. He is so different from the way Gavin was at that age. Take that time and enjoy yourself, relax, make a nice meal, organize, catch up on personal emails, all the time knowing Will is playing and using his imagination and you are right there when he wants you.

I think its totally normal, abby is 15 months and plays by herself ALL day she checks in every so often for a hug, kiss, cookie, a drink but she seems like she's having a great time, she does like when I play with her but only when she "asks" for it she plays well with other kids so I don't worry!
