19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

All she wants to do is eat..she's already chubby as it is and ped wants her on 1 percent to reduce calories..I just don't want her to get into the habit of eating so much..when we go out for lunch or dinner she will scream her head off if she doesn't get food.Chat Icon My MIL is overweight and diabetic and as a baby I wasn't so worried but now as a toddler I'm getting a bit worried...

Does anyone else have a toddler that just loves to eat all the time

Re: 19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

she started walking recently, no?

I'd give her more time to thin out through activity and switch the milk to 1%.

I am sure she will be fine! Chat Icon

I love her chubby little self! Chat Icon

thanks..so do I, and I would always flip out on anyone (DH and MIL) that would get on me about her being too chubby, but now I see it's getting too much, she wants cookies all the time, which I rarely give her, but the only way sometimes I get her to sit through a shopping trip is with snacks..so I honestly have no clue what to do..I tried giving her raisins instead of crappy crackers or what not, but she caught on quickly and now could care less about them...she could eat blueberries all day though if I allowed her toChat Icon

Today I went out for lunch with a girlfriend and the child went to town...she started walking about 3 months ago...and she gained a lot of weight from her 15 mos to 18 mos appt which the ped wasn't thrilled about..she shouldn't be gaining as much as she is...

Re: 19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

Hey this was DS too- he was HUGE and kept gaining at a rapid rate..

He was a big eater, still is in some ways- but at age it slowed a lot.. some things that happened...

- got him in the habit of drinking lots of water. Only offered water and milk to drink, no juice

- got him as physically active as I could

- offered him fruit as a snack first, offered low cal, low sugar and salt snacks from Trader Joes. no cookies except low fat low sugar ones.

- as he became more curious and active- he ate less...

Re: 19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

I dont know. I wish I could help you. My DD was very heavy but thinned out so much. I only feed her 3 meals a day, always in her high chair, never snacks on a shopping trip unless she is missing a meal. I dont even give snacks during the day, just seems to be no time for them when she eats 3 full meals a day (with beverages between of course). Plus I dont like crumbs all over my living room!!! And I didnt want to start a bad habit of eating while in a store. I see even when I give her a drink in the car seat, every time she gets in t here she wants one so I only give it when I think she NEEDS it. I often worry I am not feeding her enough since I don't give snacks. It's so hard to know what's enough and not enough!!!!

Does she ASK for food? Do you feed all meals in the high chair (or if out to eat at a table)?

We got her off juice completely, she has water or milk all the time...

I always offer fruit..she loves fruit, but tends to like sweets as well...

Goobster, she only eats her real meals in a high chair or seated at a table outside..as for snacks its honestly sometimes the ONLY way I can even go food shopping bc she'll scream her head off in the stroller/shopping cart...she hates being seated, she would run rampant in the store if I let her, she doesn't hold hands and will not stay by me if I let her out..so it's the ONLY way I can have her sit still...

She also looooves her milk

Hmmm...can you tell me what she might have in an average day? How are we supposed to know how much to feed them???

OK so here is a typical day for her...
in the morning she'll have her sippy with milk
then she'll have one waffle and two strawberries

if we go shopping she'll have some t ype of snack, a small snack trap with goldfish and pretzles mixed in

she'lll have another sippy of milk

lunch she'll have half a piece of whole wheat bread, two pieces of organic turkey and a piece of cheese

she'll then have a half a banana

Water throughout the day

she'll sometimes want another snack in the afternoon, but I try to keep it at bay

dinner is usually a tiny bit of chicken and a bit of sweet potato or dr praegers veggie pancake, like half of one..

she'll also have another sippy of milk sometime before dinner

she is EATING ALOT I feel like

DS is 22 months, and I don't think your DD is eating a lot at all. DS eats bigger meals it seems (unfortunately no fruits and veggies) so I don't think she is eating too much. Besides, it doesn't seem like she's having chips and cookies for dinner. Chat Icon

Thx, I forgot to add she usually has some fruit after dinner...

I try to give her meals as healthy as possible...breakfast is the hardest bc she hates oatmeal so I try to give her wholegrain waffles etc...

Also, she loooves pasta could have pasta for every meal if possible..on the weekend I'll give her pasta, but I don't give her fast food a lot (not saying it's wrong at all) just don't want her to get used to it bc I don't want to get her hooked on it...she loves bready things too which isn't good...But she can eat more, she can polish off an entire slice of pizzaChat Icon

since milk is huge for her- I honeslty think the drop in % is going to make a decent difference but it'll be a little while before you notice it.

She is a gorgeous kid though.Chat Icon

Oh gosh...I have the opposite problem. It doesn't sound like she is eating a ridiculous amount in one day. I think giving her the 1% milk should make a difference. Chat Icon

Re: 19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

shes doesn't seem to be eating a lot at all.

but I have to tell you, I'd be more apt to get one of those back pack leashes for the super market than "bribe" luce with snacks. I dont' want to get into that habit (but I come from an overweight family so this weighs heavily on my mind, no pun intended).

are you opposed to those? I mean, it's a win win. she'll get to move around AND not have to have that snack. with the drop in fat% percentage in her milk that could be a big deal.

I wouldn't drop a milk feeding though. she still needs her milk!!!!

Re: 19 mos old eating ALOT!!!!

I don't think that sounds like too much. DS used to eat a ton and be a chunker, he was walking/running by his firts bday but he didn't really start to thin out until he was 2-2.5. Now he's almost 4 and not a beanpole, but no chunk on him at all.
As for the shopping snacks, it was the only way I got anything done with DS.Chat Icon

We actually have one that we got for our cruise, and let's just refer to my other "tantruming toddler" post if you want me to put that on her...it would be a nightmareChat Icon

ETA:I didn't give her mid morning milk this AM and she's fine, I just gave her water, although she's standing on top of me right now holding her bibChat Icon

My son is 19 mos and that doesn't sound like a lot to me at all. I don't think you should worry about it. If she is hungry let her eat, just make sure its nutritious and not junk. When has had a lot of milk during the day (like 3 sippies) and wants more I usually will give him skim then. THey are growing and will are becoming more and more active. She will eventually thin out from the increased activity. I would not worry about it at all, she is beautiful!
