1st Bday-Cake Smash? yay or nay
So I'm kinda leaning toward doing a cake smash but I really dont want to spend an arm and leg on a photographer.
What you do you ladies think Is it worth it? know any "affordable" photographers?
dd bday is at the end of july and I gotta get going with the planning if Im going to to it - outfit etc...

I thought the photographer I used was very reasonable and the pictures came out great. It really all depends on the amount that you think is affordable. I used Forever Fireflies.
Also, if you want to get this done within the next few weeks you may have a tough time booking a photographer unless your schedule is very flexible.

cake smash photos are adorable and all...but to be quite honest...while they are nice...they have a "staged" feeling to them. Today's "cake smash" used to occur naturally with a perfectly timed snapshot of a child smashing cake into their mouth at their birthday party. Now it's elaborate with outfit changes and backdrops and has turned into something people almost feel obligated to have bc it's so popular.
If you really wanted it but can't afford it, try doing one yourself! you could get a roll of paper backdrop for DD to do it on and take all the time you need. I know for me...if money was no object...sure, I'd do it. But I'm not going to feel bad about not doing it if there are better (and more needed) things I could be spending my money on.

They are very cute, but just not for me. I would prefer to take nice shots of LO during their bday party.

DITTO! The candid shots I snapped when DD was actually in her high chair, on her birthday, eating cake for the first time, are IMO so much better than any photographer could have staged with fancy backdrops and expensive tutus' etc. I feel like mine are well- real. Because that is what they are.

I could not agree more. I'm personally not into all the staged photo events, regardless of age.

I have DDs this weekend with Forever Fireflies. Heather is very affordable, but I doubt you'd be able to book her on such short notice. The good photographers book up months in advance. It's definitely worth reaching out to her though.
Personally, I really love the one year old sessions she does. It's not just a cake smash - there will be a couple of different looks. And I'm really big on pictures, so for me it makes sense and is worth it. Can you do your own. Absolutely. But I know I'll get frustrated trying to get the right shot.
I also got a smash cake for DDs birthday party so she can do it again for our family to see. I'm sure it will be just as special and I'll have the pics from that as well.

And it might sizzle, DS tore apart everything he ate but when it came to his smash cake, he picked at the frosting and that was it. Even when DH tried to show DS what to do... nope didn't happen. I was glad we took our own pics. i would just do a regular photo shoot, not a specific cake smash one.
