1st birthday parties.. open presents during? or after?
what did everyone do?
we are having it at a restaurant, and yea they can open a gift but it takes a year and a day 
so its not rude to open them when we bring them home right?

After. It would be way too crazy at a restaurant, IMO. Plus, they don't really understand the gift opening process yet.

we had some close family stay to watch him (me) open the gifts, but it was at my parent's house.
I think you can fill up the car with the gifts then take them home to open. I know some pple invite close family back to the house to watch

after.. it would take up too much time and I wouldn't want other kids to be upset. I also like to be able to sit down with the kids and video tape them opening the gifts and being able to take the time to write down who it's from so i can then write the thank yous.
ETA that as they have gotten older, I've become good at putting some gifts away so that I can later re-introduce them to the kids as "new"

For our oldest we open gifts after most people left. It was too much to do it will everyone was there.
We plan on waiting till after for Jason's party also.
