1st grade home work and tests
My son is in first grade. I am curious if what he receives so far is standard for 1st graders.
Spelling Test Fridays Math Tests Thursdays
Daily Home work Monday-Thursday: Read 20 minutes - must fill out a reading log 2 pages of home work boxes Study spelling words nightly
Once a week write spelling words twice to be handed in. Twice a week 4 page math dittos (8 pages in total)
Occasionally - project (so far its been what have you done for summer vacation)
Weekly he receives Spanish words to memorize their meanings.
I would say it takes DS about 40 minutes to complete all of his home work each night (20 minutes reading and 20 minutes dittos).

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
It's always been about 10 minutes x grade in my experience when assigning how (I teach 4th), on top of reading. My 4th graders were expected to do 40 min of how (estimate) and 40 mins of reading. This was a bldg policy.

1st grade home work and tests
We have basically the same. Every day reading for 20 minutes, Math dittos every night, reading or ELA work every night and they have spelling assignments nightly. Depending on the dittos it can take DD anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes nightly aside from the reading. Spelling Pretest on Monday, tests on Fridays and I don't think they do math tests but I could be wrong.

When I taught my school didn't have a policy, but I tried to adhere, generally, to the 10 minutes per grade formula. I taught 7th and gave tasks they could do in 20 minutes or so, keeping in mind that mine was only 1 of their 4 major subjects.
That sounds like a lot for first grade. My DD gets a math worksheet that usually takes 10 minutes, plus reading.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
Read for 15-20 minutes, write on reading log (I write it since there is no space for her to...teeny tiny lines)
One ELA ditto One math ditto
List of sight words for the week that have be memorized by Friday. I think there are 6 total for the week. They are easy, and typically ones she already knows.
Takes about 10 minutes to do the dittos, sometimes 15 minutes.
Math test...we had one so far.
No spelling tests until January I was told.
They do A TON of work during the day. I'm amazed at the amount of completed work she comes home with.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
Similar - but I have to say the hw sheets have been super easy so far and we are done fairly quickly. We do the hw sheets and spelling right after school and we read before bed.
Read for 15 minutes, write on reading log
One ELA ditto One math ditto
Spelling - we have one day 3x each, and then sentences for the next 2 days (but I have him do them all the same day), one day study the words for next day test. Only 6 words so far and very simple. DS said he saw a paper and he thinks they go up to 8 next week which for some odd reason made my little geek very excited.
Math test...we had one, maybe 2 so far (He says 2 but not sure 1 was technically a test)
Spelling tests every Friday.
He gets a leveled reader sent home every week which he is suppose to read every night. The last 3 times it has come with a reading comprehension sheet of some sort - 2 or 3 questions. Not sure if everyone gets the sheet yet - he is at a higher reading level than most I suspect.
No real projects yet outside of school wide core value assignments (had 2 of those so far - draw a picture once or write about whatever the value was that month).

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
My ds gets some type of spelling or literacy homework, (ie write words 3x, read given poem and answer questions, etc) That is Monday-Wed
Thu they have a reading project to do
Mon-Thu they ahve 1-2 pages of math homework in their workbooks
Friday Optional math assignment.
Spelling tests every friday
Math Not really sure about tests, DS mentioned a test but I havent seen any scores yet.
No really assigned nightly reading, we just read together (sometimes him only, sometimes me only, sometimes we alternate pages) before bedtime.
Takes him about 10mins on average not including reading at night
he was in catholic school for kIndergarten and I think he had more homework last year!

1st grade home work and tests
I teach first and a usual night is like this: Read (starts off 15 minutes but increases over the year) I don't consider reading part of the time allotted for homework. Reading should happen, homework or night. I think it's just a good habit to get into.
Math sheet (now with our new math program, it's a back and front ditto)
Spelling work (we haven't started yet, but there is an assignment nightly)
Enrichment hw (something I have been sending home for years and have had positive feedback about)
I DO give hw on the weekends but it's simple.

Boo...it doesn't matter to me if it's simple or not. Our weekends our family time, we go away a lot, and having to worry about homework every weekend is annoying. It's their time off, a break from school. They are in school all week. I can understand once in a while, but not every single weekend. My HS kid doesn't even get HW on the weekend.

Your HS kid doesn't get hw on weekends??
In our school the policy is starting in 3rd grade weekend hw is allowed and so far the teacher has been giving it.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
We get a packet of work every Monday that is due back on Fridays. There are usually about 6-8 sheets of Math or LA.
He must read each night for 15-20 mins and then every Monday submit one-pager about 2 books that he read during the week. Pretty simple, just title, author, characters and a sentence or two on his favorite part of the book.
Every Friday he has a spelling test.

Nope, and never in MS either. On a rare occasion there is a project or something out of the ordinary, but I can count the times that has happened on one hand.

My DS is in 1st and this is pretty much how it goes for us. He does not get homework on the weekends and I am THANKFUL for that! They have enough to do during the week. They need a break somewhere!

Wow really no hw ever on weekends? What district does this (simply curious)? I had hw every weekend growing up always had papers or other assignments starting maybe 3rd grade. My 1st grader doesn't now but I assume eventually she will as she gets older. Then again I had a teacher in 3rd grade who gave a weeknight assignment to learn all states and capitals and major bodies of water to learn for a test the next day. So maybe I am not the best judge.

To my knowledge it's not a district policy to not give homework on the weekend. Maybe other teachers in the district give it, I have no idea, don't really care to be honest. We have just been fortunate to have teachers that realize kids need a break, too.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
When DS was in 1st home work was sent home on Mondays, due Friday. He had a book for each night, had to write the title, author and 1-2 sentences about the book. Had to write word wall words 6 times each, usually had a packet with a mix of English and math skills that was about 8 front and back pages.

1st grade home work and tests
My DS gets hwk on the weekends and I am all for it. Hope it doesn't change. He has 3 days to complete, obviously it will get more challenging as he gets older.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
Sounds about average to me. My DS has spelling and math tests weekly too. Also pretests on Monday. Doesn't matter if you ace the pretest - you still practice the words all week. We also get about 2-3 math worksheets per night, one spelling work sheet per night and have 20 minutes of reading. DS also gets an advanced packet in math and reading/spelling that he has the week to complete - he actually enjoys this work so it's what gets done first I don't find the HW to be a lot at all. He usually reads anyway and I don't stress if it's 10 min or 20 honestly because some days he reads a lot more and some days a lot less. The rest of the homework takes him maybe 10 minutes. I'm sure as the work gets harder throughout the year it will take longer. No HW on Fridays.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
he gets a two-sided math sheet each night (mon-thurs)
Spelling words on Monday, he must do 3 spelling activites from him monthly spelling menu by friday (spellingcity.com, typing them with silly fonts, writing them different way, 3x each, etc).
Spelling test on Friday.
I don't know the frequency of math tests as I don't recall me knowing that he's had a test.
He did have a social studies test last week on voting. So I guess they aren't too scheduled.
He gets a guided reading book once per week. We get two nights to do the book and answer 5 questions about it.

Re: 1st grade home work and tests
DS gets homework Mon-Thurs
Math every night, double sided sheet Spelling list on Monday and then work using those words Mon - Tues - Wed Thursday is usually a writing/drawing project based on something they learned about that week (Christopher Columbus, Johnny Appleseed, etc.)
I would say homework takes no longer than 15-20 min per day
He also gets a spelling test every Friday and I think they have had 2 math tests so far
