1st time moms
what are your opinions on Lamaze/Childbrith class. My dr. suggested it just so we would know what to expect but I dont think its for me, I really cant see myself doing the whole who-who-hee thing So do you think its helpful or a waste of time?

Re: 1st time moms
I am going to a class at my dr's office, given by one of the delivery nurses. It is only one saturday, and they end the class at the hospital with a tour.
She said they go over all of the different scenarios...epis, everything, not just breathing.
I feel like I should do it, since it is so convenient, and even if I never use any of it, at least I get the hospital tour...

Re: 1st time moms
We could do 2 things...take 5 classes at the hospital OR hire a private nurse to come to the house one time (they are the same cost). My dr. said he will be the one giving the hospital tour so thats not one of the benefits for us.

Re: 1st time moms
I am doing Bradley birth classes.
I won't know if they help until I go into labor () but they are worth it to me.
The classes focus on understanding the labor and delivery process (as it relates to my body; not the hospital hoo-hah) and pain management techniques. I have already used the techniques to ease leg cramps at night. The method also emphasizes a partner assisted birth, which I like b/c I want DH to be part of the process and not a bystander.
I am all about preparation AND I really don't want to use meds. Hospitals nowadays except you to get an epi and use pitocin, so I want to be prepared to understand what to expect to hopefully make it easier to say no when the time comes.

Re: 1st time moms
I just rented some videos from the library and watched those. I feel confident with what I learned in there, and didn't feel the need to spend money on classes

I did a Bradley class for the same reasons & I found it to be really informative & will hopefully find it really helpful when in labor (there's no knowing until the big day!).
I also watched the Laugh & Learn DVD before I took the class and found that to be pretty informative as well.

Re: 1st time moms
i didnt register for any classes. this is my first and honestly i have no desire to do any classes. My mother had natural childbirth 4 times never did any classes either and shes fine. Neither of my sisters did it either (one has 4 kids the other has 1 baby) and they were fine. So for me i dont think i would benefit from them..

I'm glad we did it, it was very informative and we met a lot of great people but the lamaze breathing we learned went right out the window when i was in labor!!

Re: 1st time moms
I am taking a childbirth prep class. I'm not so interested in the breathing techniques (although maybe it will be helpful) as much as I'm interested in the information about what to expect during early labor, at the hospital, during the delivery, etc. It's not like I have a clue what I'm doing so anything I learn there can only help .

Re: 1st time moms
I'm not doing them...when i found out my mom had me and my bro(who was 9lb2oz) without an epi or drugs and barely spoke english at the time I figured I could do it too. Well maybe not the drug-free part, but I'm going to try.

Re: 1st time moms
I'm still undecided... I think I may take them just for the fact of it... but it also depends on the prices, the times, and how often. So...we'll see...

Re: 1st time moms
For my first PG we just did the hospital tour.
I heard it goes out the window but could be fun thing to do with your DH.
When it was time to push the nurse gave me a 5 second run down of what to do and I did it. I don't know if a class would have made a difference at the point for me.

Re: 1st time moms
When I was pg with DS I took a class thru the hospital I delivered at. It was. Helpful in knowing what to expect and how to recognize signs of labor and what to do. We did some breathing but not the hee, hee, hoo stuff. As far as actual labor it did nothing for me, but I was glad we did it anyway. HTH!

Re: 1st time moms
We are doing Childbirth classes which we find much more helpful then Lamaze becuse it isnt all about the breathing its about you and the baby and whats good for you, whats normal to feel what to call the Dr about, they even showed us how to put a bunch of different bottles together and a lot about SIDS which i thought was important! I reccomend it!

Nope. I am going to get the Laugh and Learn DVDs, unless my OB or pain management doctor tell me that I really need a class.
