1st Trimester Screening Results In
And they are basically good.
My chance of having a baby with Trisomy 18 is 1 in 3,800. My risk of having a baby with Down's sounded not bad on the surface, 1 in 215, but my doctor explained a positive test result is 1 in 200 or lower. She recommended I consider an amnio, but I haven't quite decided on that yet. The miscarriage risk of that test is 1 in 200, slightly lower than my risk of having a baby with Down's.
Well, I'll take this as positive news for the moment. The 1 in 215 is lower than the rate for women my age.
And the best part was having the ultrasound done. I can't believe that my baby now looks like a baby! My first ultrasound just showed a vague grayish blob. And he/she was moving around!

Re: 1st Trimester Screening Results In
My DH and I decided againest the amnio after we received our Ultrascreen Results....
I already have a child with Down Syndrome and knew that basically my risk was 1 in 100 b/c of that or 1 in 340 due to my age. After we received the results of the Ultrascreen and I saw how small the babies NT fold was we decided not to have any invasive testing....
My doctor, at the time, was really pushing for me to have the amnio b/c of my risk factors. In the end it is your decision.

Re: 1st Trimester Screening Results In
Dont worry, My dr explained to me that we mau not want that test because of the wa it is designed....it has to give back 5 percent of the results as positive, this is in order to catch all the instances....i am opting to not have it as Iw ont have an amnio....what is your age, are you at risk? and downs in your fa?

Re: 1st Trimester Screening Results In
I am 39, which ups my risk quite a bit. There is no Down's in my family, or DH's, but there is a small risk of spina bifida (I have epilepsy, and while I'm not a risky patient since my episodes are under control, it is still a slight concern).
That's a good point to ask about the nuchal fold measurements. My doctor told me the risk went up because of my age, so perhaps the measurements were fine.
Frankly, I am more concerned about spina bifida. If we had a child with Down's, I would definitely go forward with the pregnancy. There is a good chance of having a healthy child still.

Re: 1st Trimester Screening Results In
I had the same type result as you. You know, I am 39 also and my risk was 1:259. My doctor reccomends the amnio for anything less than 1:300. I felt that since it was better than the averge for my age group and my measurements also were good, I would not do the amnio. I thought about it for one night, we talked about it and decided we would go with the flow.
I have to admit, the last week before I gave birth, I started to have alot of anxiety that I should have had the amnio, just to be prepared in case something was wrong. I did have alot of sono's during the pregnancy and they kept telling me things were ok but I kept a slight doubt in the back of my mind.
In the end, its what you are comfortable with ...
Good Luck and Congrats on seeing the baby!!
