2 naps to 1... how did you know it didn't work?

If anyone of you have tried to transition from 2 naps to 1... how did you know when it wasn't working?

ds is almost 15 months. He's been on 1 nap for a little more than 2 weeks i think. He's been taking a 2 1/2- 3 hour nap each day. but the last 3 days it's been an hour and a half, which is not enough for him.

Then when i go to put him to bed early, he fights it.

(he's getting 2 bottom teeth in and started with a runny nose this morning. he's never been a bad teether either).

So i'm not sure if this is teeth/sickness related or that he's not ready for 1 nap. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I didn't transition him to the 1 nap - he's been doing it himself. THere are still days where he will go down for 2 naps.

Maybe that's the difference?

Do you still attempt 2 naps?

Same thing here....for a LONG time, he would still sometimes take 2 naps a day.

I want to say until almost 2..

No because before he'd go down for the am nap no problem but will not go down for the afternoon nap at all. He was also fighting bedtime too.

See the problem is the afternoon nap. I hate to try the am nap and then have him awake from 11am until 7pm, KWIM?

If you try an AM nap and he's not having it, he won't let you put him down for a PM nap either?

Maybe you need to wait longer for the AM nap to make it longer? Or longer in between naps? I find that he can go longer w/o sleep, but he will always nap.

No he'll always go down for the AM nap, just not the PM one.

The thing is we can't go longer in between naps. There's not enough time in the day. Chat Icon When he did 2 naps this was his schedule:

6:30am wake
9:30-11 nap
2-3:30 nap
7:30 pm bedtime

*he's one where if he napped later than 3:30pm, he wouldn't go to bed on time. Chat Icon

Re: 2 naps to 1... how did you know it didn't work?

DS went from 2 naps to 1 on his own, around a year. It was sort of early, so I kept trying to put him down for the afternoon nap, but he kept fighting it and screaming every time I put him in his crib. After trying this for a bit, I gave up and let him have one nap. He did just fine overall, though initially he kept napping at 9:30 and got cranky later in the day. I kept keeping him up a little longer each day until he was napping at 11:30 or so. Now he naps at 1:00 at 21 months.

It's hard to say if one nap is right for your child or not. You could try pushing the morning nap a bit later little by little and see how that goes. Once DS was napping a bit later, it held him over better during the day and he wasn't cranky later on anymore. If he is sick now though, I would wait until he's better to try again.

Re: 2 naps to 1... how did you know it didn't work?

DS just transitioned to one nap a week ago but he needed two naps yesterday b/c he woke up earlier than usual.

he did fight me for one night going to bed but that's because he is teething BADLY (molars and eye teeth Chat Icon )

i think it's fine to go between 1 and 2 naps depending on the day.

Yeah i think we'll have to do this. It's just so hard because both DH and I work FT and my in laws watch ds sometimes. They don't like the kid to nap (Chat Icon) so it would be a lot easier if i said "have him nap at xxxx" instead of "put him down when he appears tired."

I guess i just have to live in sleeping h*ll for a few more months... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: 2 naps to 1... how did you know it didn't work?

we just transitioned ds to one nap a day due to him giving me massive issues with the afternoon nap and then he was falling asleep in the high chair at dinner... what i did that helped was i gave him a snack at lets say 9:30-10:00 with his cup and then pushed the 9:30 nap back until 11... this way he naps from 11 to 1:30 and then has lunch... it has worked for the last 2 weeks....

Re: 2 naps to 1... how did you know it didn't work?

I would maybe gradually push the A.M. nap back until 11 or so, at like 15 minute increments. I think he is napping too early and not tired enough for nap #2 in the afternoon but is a mess by dinnertime. I dont know, Im just thinking out loud.

When DS transitioned to one nap, his morning nap moved later and later and it eventually became an 11-2 or 12-3 nap.

So what do you mean? you mean have him nap at 11 and just take the 1 nap? if he naps at 11, he's not going to go down later for a 2nd nap. That i know.

Exactly, you should should be able to get a solid 2-3 hours out of him then. If you think he is ready for one nap. From what youve said, sounds like he is definitely getting there.

I suggest this as well. DS has been on one nap since 9 or 10 months. We would be out in the morning so he wouldn't nap and then I would put him down at 11ish. Eventually 11ish moved to 12ish and now I can get a lunch in before nap. I used to have him eat lunch when he woke. No he can sleep from 12 -2/3. Sometimes he will wake up after an hour and a half or so (which stinks!) but then I just deal with him for the rest of the day. GL! Chat Icon
