I have twins who are 20 months old that are really not talking. They babble all day and understand everything I say to them. Have any other moms had babies that were like this and then started talking? Should I have early intervention come? Thanks for any insight!

I have no personal experience but I have heard that twins can have their own language and take a little longer to actually speak OUR language. But I also have heard that's no reason not to start early intervention. Personally I'd check with pediatrician and see what he/she recommends. Good luck!

That is how it happened for us, a whole lot of babbling before they pick up a word. Mine are 17 months and are just starting to really pick up words. They say they should have about 5 words by 24 months.

When it comes to twins there can be delays just because they are typically born so early. So you do get some wiggle room with that whole "adjusted age" thing. My girls were born at 35w6d so in my mind they were born 4 weeks early. So I give them a 4 week "extension" for whatever milestones.

One of my girls said the word "up" at 8 months. She used the word appropriately, (when in her crib she would reach up her arms and say "up" until I took her out) she did this for weeks and then never said it or anything else again for a long time.

They just started being much more vocal in the last 6-8 weeks or so. Mostly it was all babble and two syllable sounds "da da", "ma ma", "ba ba" and "nan na". They started with da da as one of their firsts, it was a really long time of two syllable words. Then they said "no" and would string it along "no no no no no" . They turned Da Da into "Daddy" and just recently ma ma turned into "Mommy". Once the first one learns a word about 2 weeks later the other one picks up the word. It does seem to me that they babbled a lot before they would pick up a word.

If it was me, I would ask the pediatrician but wouldn't start to worry for a few more months.
