2.5 year old and Speech
DH thinks we should have DS evaluated. Does anyone know what is normal for a 2.5 year old? He has a lot of words and puts together some sentences, but a lot of it is hard to understand. Thanks.

Did you mention it to your Ped when you saw them last?
I was just told to have DS evaluated for something else. He's 1 and has gagging issues with any food too thick.
It doesn't cost you anything and may help

Talk to your ped. E.I. ends at age 3. If your ped. is not worried and says to wait, then, I'd wait until your DC is 3 and go through the school district. If your ped. is concerned now, then, call E.I. and have him evaluated.

Re: 2.5 year old and Speech
There are different degrees of "normal"
I would say, the bare minimum of "normal" would be the following for a 2.5 year old:
Pointing, nodding, and gesturing to make his needs known (if he cannot verbalize what he wants and needs)
30-50 words in the vocabulary - HIS words - so they can be what he calls things (ju for juice, cu for cup) - not well articulated but there - even approximations
Joint attention - looking at your face and eyes to check to see if you are understanding him
Even if he has the above - I would STILL get an eval - especially if articulation and understanding him is becoming difficult for you so that he gets frustrated and either:
Tantrums Misbehaves Stops trying to communicate all together
good luck - you can always FM me if you have any questions....
