2.5 year old hitting his baby brother
DS has always been very loving with our new baby who arrived almost 12 weeks ago- until the past few days.
Now, he says "I hit" and has been lightly smacking his baby brother on the head! He always does it while I am holding the baby, and has a grin on his face and then says "no hit".
DH and I put him in time out, say "NO HITTING" and we know that HE knows what he is doing wrong. Then he says 'Sorry baby Ethan" .
He went through a brief phase of hitting DH and I in the past, and we ignored and gave the silent treatment afterwards which worked and put an end to it.
But in this case- I feel like I need to protect the baby- any advice from BTDT moms??? P

Re: 2.5 year old hitting his baby brother
The fact that he's saying "I hit" makes me think he's doing it solely for the attention - even though the attention he's getting is negative.
Other than the time-outs, can you guys give him some extra one on one time? I don't know if that will work, I've never been there, it's just an idea
ETA: Can you tell him that if he hits he won't be allowed to hold the baby... will he understand that?

Re: 2.5 year old hitting his baby brother
mine is 3.5 and my baby is 4 months old...so I am trying to remember 2.5 and what I would expect out of him.
Right now at 3.5, it would be bad. I would probably pick him up and put him outside of my home. I am not kidding. I would watch from the window to make sure he did not go anywhere, but I would want to do something crazy severe to make sure it did not happen again.
but my kid is a year older...so I don't know if in that year he is just way more mature then last year to know that he is to never ever lay a hand on her
good luck!

you should probably listen to this nice answer.
I am selfish and leave my 2 alone at times together while i shower. I can't imagine worrying about him hitting her.

Thank you. I agree that he is looking for attention. I really make an effort to spend one on one time with him- so does DH.
He seemed to be doing well with the transition..but now this happens.

Today- I put him in his room, shut the door, and told him he was being punished. Took his loveys away too. I know that hurt him.
He is normally a very sweet little boy and we never had any aggression issues with him.

i am sure what you are doing will work then. since he is only 2.5 i don't know if the same approach will work, but we made the baby "josh's baby" also, i say silly things that mean a ton to him. when we eat dinner, dh and i will take turns yelling out, I sit near josh tonight! or if we are out to eat, dh and i will stand there like no it is my turn to sit by josh.
