DS is very sick & in the hospital - LONG

Sorry it's so long but it's too hard to condense it and say what is wrong. I posted last weekend about my DS being sick and not sure if I should take him the the ER on Sunday. I just wanted to share that he has been in Schneider's since Tuesday. It's been a crazy week with crazy symptoms.

He woke up Thu (Fri early AM) with a burning fever. I took him to the ped on Fri and he did not have an ear infection or a red throat. He tested negative on the quick Strep test. I had the flu the week before so we assumed he caught it. He ended up never sleeping on Fri and wouldn't eat. he was drinking though. The Motrin and Tylenol would not knock the fever out. Saturday be was still fevered and still drinking but now he was sleeping. I have family who are nurses as well as all are parents and everyone thought it was the flu and he was sleeping off the day before. He slept all day and into the night, waking up literally for 5 minutes here and there. I tried to feed him and he ended up throwing it up. His fever did go down though and I was encouraged. But Sunday he continued to sleep and I think that's when I posted here...I called my ped and he was kind of on the fence, still thought he had the flu but suggested I go to LIJ ER since he had to make a call on it based on me calling. I was also on the fence bc I didnt want to subject him to the ER and I had to get someone to watch my other 2 kids. I finally chose to take him to PM Pediatrics where he slept on 2 chairs for the 1 1/2 hour wait but they said he had an ear infection and red throat. Amoxycillin was prescribed and we went home. My ped was a bit annoyed that I went to PM Ped since he wasnt sure if who saw him and if he trusted their diagnosis so he wanted to see him on Mon. Monday he went to the ped and he sent us to a pediatic ENT since DS now had a lump on the right side of his neck And was still sleeping which was scaring the f*ck out of me, moreso bc no one had an explanation. The ENT Dr put him on Augmentin and wanted to know if he was doing better by the next day. I felt he wasnt on Tue and then it gets crazier....Ped sees him and then sends us the LIJ ER. Over at LIJ someone finally addresses my worry over his lethargy and says that they want to do a spinal tap bc the neck swelling and sleeping are signs of meningitis. frickin meningitis!! SO they do a spinal tap (heartbreaking btw if you've never seen a 22m old get one) but luckily he tested negative for it. Then they did a CAT scan and he has a mass on his neck that was determined to be a retropharyngeal abscess. No one can explain how the hell it happened and where it came from so quick... he had no ear infaction on Fri, he had no upper resipiratory issues prior to this. It's still so puzzling, even from speaking to the Drs. several times a day over this. He is at Schneiders on IV antibiotics and will continue to be on them there for at least another day or 2. He will then come home on some yet to be determined antibiotic for up to 2 weeks. Apparently an abscess like this is hard to attack with oral antibiotics so he may come home with a pick line (not sure of spelling) but it's an at home IV antibiotic. This is just crazy. Oh yes, and it will probably mean severe diarrhea since it wipes out all the good bacteria as well. I'm looking into if there's a way to avoid that.

I wasn't going to post this since I feel like a lot of people here don't know me very well except a few old timers from old LIW days. I don't post pics of the kids or discuss them in a way that everyone knows them, even though I do have a couple thousand posts. But we can use some positive thoughts and prayers over here. DH and I have been running around and juggling the hospital stays and the other 2 kids. But hopefully he will be home soon. I feel so bad for him, he is so done with anyone going near him. All he does is say Mommy Mommy Mommy and has been throwing some fits the past day or 2 when people come near him. My GF was there to see him today and I guess he didn't recognize her and started wailing he though it was another people coming to poke and prod him. He is improving in the past day or so but I still cannot believe how the past week has been pure insanity. So scary to see him so sick like this. Please keep him in your thoughts.
