2nd Language spin-off...
I would love for Andrew to learn Italian but my family thinks Spanish would be a better option.
Which do you think? I speak neither and would be learning also.

Re: 2nd Language spin-off...
I'm going to start my DC off with Spanish. I took Spanish in HS, so I still understand quite a bit.
We have at least 5 Spanish-speaking TV channels, Dora the Explorer and Diego have Spanish, many documents have Spanish. Signs are also in Spanish, etc, etc. Once they learn one Romance language, it's really simple to learn the others. Spanish, Italian, French, etc.
I can actually understand some French and Italian, because it is so similar to Spanish.

Re: 2nd Language spin-off...
definitely Spanish!!!!
by the time your son is out of school the ability to speak Spanish is going to be invaluable! Even now, you can't get certain jobs if you can't speak Spanish.

Re: 2nd Language spin-off...
Grammatically Spanish is much easier than Italian IMHO, as a Spanish teacher who took Italian. (no one else in my family speaks Spanish)
If you are going to teach your child another language you need to do it constantly, to be most effective. If you are going to be the one that is teaching him, then you shouldn't speak English to him. The German teacher's kids are totally bilingual. My daughter because I was speaking English a lot, started confusing her words so I had to stop because it was causing her to have problems with others being able to understand her. Example to her a cat was a catgo. (spanish gato) So I had to stop for now but I will start with her again when she hits 3 and then we will work on. She knows that Mommy speaks Spanish and English and she will tell me if she wants to hear Good Night Moon and other books in Spanish or English.
Good luck with it.

Re: 2nd Language spin-off...
My cousin is a spanish HS teacher and only speaks to her one year old son in Spanish. They also have a spanish speaking nanny. Everyone else (except for my brother in law - from uruguay) speaks english. I wish I could raise my child to be bi-lingual. It's such a great gift to a child, in my opinion.
